Mazda was talking diesel power figures last week at an Icelandic press drive of the CX-5, Mazda's upcoming entrant into the crowded but profitable compact crossover segment.

The American-market CX-5 diesel will have a direct-injection, 2.2-liter "SKYACTIV-D" four-cylinder under the hood. Look for the turbocharged mill to produce a substantial 310 lb-ft of torque when it arrives in 2014.

Horsepower, meanwhile, should be more or less equal to the gasoline-powered CX-5 at about 160 ponies. Mazda didn't comment on gas mileage, but expect the oil-burning CX-5's mpg rating to be in the low 30s, if not higher.

Also expect a four-digit price increase for the diesel compared to the normal CX-5, which will go on sale in February 2012 with a price tag around $20,000. Mazda has high hopes for the CX-5, which will spearhead the brand's efforts to move upmarket and straddle the line between mass-market and premium.
