2010 Mazda CX-7 facelift arrives [Live Image Update]

04/08/2009, 8:20 PM

By Nick Aziz

Mazda quietly unveiled its revised 2010 CX-7 earlier this year at the Canadian International Auto Show, but the Japanese automaker waited until this week’s New York Auto Show to introduce the revised crossover to United States. Headlining the mildly facelifted model is a new base engine: A naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four.

Mazda’s MZR four-cylinder, which does duty in the 2010 Mazda3 s and and the 2009 Mazda6 i has been added to the CX-7 range. Mated to a five-speed automatic, the engine will be used in base versions of the CX-7. The motor delivers 161 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and offers maximum torque of 161 pound-feet at 3,500 rpm. Fuel economy is estimated at 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg in the highway.

The familiar 2.3-liter MZR direct-injection turbo four previously standard across the lineup will continue as an option. It offers 244 hp at 5,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at only 2,500 rpm.

The most noticeable changes include larger side air-intakes, giving the CX-7 a much more aggressive look. Mazda’s familiar ’smiling’ front grille is present on the new CX-7, complete with a chrome surround. Overall, the front end changes to the CX-7 bring the small SUV more in line with the rest of Mazda’s freshened lineup.

Out back there are fewer changes, but the CX-7 does receive a modestly revised lower rear fascia.

Inside, the CX-7 sports an upgraded interior, including a revised center stack, a new steering wheel and a high-mounted LCD screen similar to the one found in the new Mazda3. Interior materials are upgraded throughout, as well.

Once again it looks ok but the current one is better.

It just looks a little stretched. Big deal.

The older CX-7 looked awkward, especially when put next to a CX-9. This helps a lot!

Seems like Mazda is taking on a Ford design philosophy. Come out wit a great design and then ruin it with the subsequent redesigns.

Ford did that with the Super Duty, F-150, Focus, etc.

I hope that base engine comes with a prescription for inhalers.

At least the new super duty’s headlamps, while looking weird, are better that way. Having them lower means less glare for cars on the road.

I really don’t like the front end at all. The huge air intake make it look like it’s yawning. The interior looks too plasticky for my taste.

The naturally aspirated 4 cylinder is purely a business move in order to compete with the CR-V’s & Rogues’s of the world. The rest of the redesign is Mazda unifying design throughout the lineup.

Take at look at the CX-7 interior versus the Outlander interior shots. The mitsu looks much better in terms of mateiral quality.

Actually, this gaping maw looks like a Mazdaspeed upgrade in a way. The giant grille, if it were feeding air into something important, could be the marker of a performance model.
