Mazda Motor Corporation will showcase the new Hakaze design concept at the 77th annual Geneva International Motor Show in March. The Mazda Hakaze is a four-seat coupe-style compact crossover SUV designed at Mazda’s European Design Centre and aimed at people in their thirties and forties who “lead active, adventurous lifestyles.”
Hakaze is the third design concept of the series created around the ‘Nagare’ design language, joining the Mazda Nagare and Mazda Ryuga which were revealed earlier this motor show season.
“Even when standing still, Hakaze seems to be effortlessly cutting through the air,” the company says. “Outside, the side body panels are textured to give the impression of sand dunes rippled by the wind and the body shape creates a muscular and taut look.”
The rear part of its roof is removable which gives it a feel similar to a convertible. The interior seat layout is unique, as the rear seats slide forward with their lower cushions under the front seats to produce a spacious luggage compartment.

Mazda has had some really nice concept ideas in the past few years, but this one doesn’t work for me. I don’t like it.

So… it seems just about anything is either an SVU or a crossover. Nice looking, but let’s cut the marketing BS. Its a f@*~ing car.

Holy crap. Mazda is spitting out concepts like a well oiled machine lately. I wonder what the deal is?

Wow, they’re really pushing their new design theme with this new wave of concepts they’re rolling out with. Can we expect to see this new design philosophy applied to the next generation Mazda 6, 3, RX-8, etc?

Is it just me, or does this and the Ryuga concept look like their designs were inspired by whales?

The general shape of the Ryuga/Nazare/Hazake concepts fit a crossover better than a car.

i understand what mazda is doing with that ‘Flow’ theme…but that side sculpting is starting to bother me..especially on this one. are they trying to be the next ‘old’ pontiac?

I could use one of those Hakazes, if they classified it as some Dunebuggy-type thing.

I like the shape of it, its a nice concept. But I hate the whole “cross over” trend. They’re tall cars! They don’t do off-road, so you might as well get a regular car.

with all of these concepts comming out, I can’t say too many things stick out. This is a perfect example.

That front fender looks a lot like the upcoming Mazda2 prototypes that have been spotted.. would make a nice addition to that lineup, essentially replacing the long-departed MX-3.. even the glass-in-tailgate rear window is similar!

So am I the only one who thinks the new Mazda concepts are possibly the ugliest automotive abortions in the past decade? I’m all for progress, but if this is progress, I don’t think the future looks very bright. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Mazda fan, having been a former MX5 driver, and having worked with and driven a lot of RX-series cars, which are brilliant on the twisties or the track. That’s actually why I’m so horrified at this possibility that Mazda’s cars are going to end up being both ugly and dynamically unexciting in the future.

^I agree. I like Mazda and the vehicles they’ve been putting out but their concepts have been hideous. I found myself skipping over them at the shows the past couple of years. Where is a concept of a worthy RX-7 replacement?

If this were ever to be put into production then it would end up looking very similar to Seat’s Leon. Just imagine it with smaller wheels, a more upright windscreen, a higher roofline for more headroom, wing mirrors, a rear-view mirror, a proper hatch back and more production-friendly doors.
I don’t see anything to get excited about here, this is nowhere near production. Mazda’s PR department are pushing out press releases featuring sketches from the design department to give the impression that they are a deisgn-led company. The cars they actually produce are very ordinary, with the exception of the halo-model RX-8.
Since they all employ buildings full of designers, whose job is to come up with sketches, concepts and ideas, I’m sure all the major manufacturers could release similar drawings every day of the week.
