Mazda has announced a new clean diesel engine that will be introduced to various markets across the world, starting with Europe in 2009, though the Japanese automaker has made no mention of following Honda ’s expected lead of U.S. sales.
Mazda’s MZR-CD engine is an enhanced 2.2 liter version of the old 2.0 liter. Mazda says the torque figure will be at the top of the class at 400 Nm, or about 295 lb-ft. It features the world’s first production application of a catalyst combustion treatment process that enhances the removal of particulate matter from the exhaust gasses via a diesel particulate filter. In a nutshell, it burns off soot cleaner and faster than Mazda’s current engines, making it clean enough to qualify for Euro-5 standards based on in-house testing.

Mazda says fuel economy should be around 5.6L/100 km in the Mazda6. The motor is expected to make its debut in the Mazda6 for 2010 and will show up in the next-generation Mazda3 and potentially the CX-7 crossover.
