Mazda unveils Kazamai concept ahead of Moscow show

07/15/2008, 9:50 AM

By Drew Johnson

Mazda has unveiled its Kazamai compact crossover concept ahead of the car’s Moscow International Automobile Salon. The Kazamai – which means “swirling crosswinds” – is the latest show car to feature Mazda’s ‘Nagare’ design language.

Although Mazda has not released any details on the Kazamai’s powertrain, the Japanese automaker says the car will continue the company’s theme of ‘sustainable zoom-zoom’. Underhood lies a direct-injection engine mated a “newly developed transmission.” The Kazamai’s flowing lines translate to better aerodynamics, which means lower CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

Mazda has yet to green light the Kazamai for production, but it seems a road-going version of the car – albeit more tame than the show car – could be in the cards. Compact SUVs are now the second largest segment in Russia – which is now the largest auto market in Europe – so Mazda is probably looking to take a slice of that pie for itself.

This will need rear and front mounted cameras not to destroy rims and tires while parking. Periscope would be good as well, I cant imagine how one can drive it safely without one.

Mazdas are sooo nice compared to what they once were. They’ve really turned a corner a few years ago. I’m not sure about that odd protuding beak though, it’s a bit Tribeca-like.

Mazda makes great concept vehicles that never look like their real vehicles. Most Mazdas look okay, (B-Series and Tribute DON’T look OK!) but even the better looking ones are not even close to the concepts. Design cues just don’t do justice!!!

I like the Nagare styling and all, but i hope it doesn’t get into the next RX-7. There’s a pattern now of Japanese automakers that try to bring back the successful sports cars of the 90’s but forgetting what made the car successful in the first place.

On this car, i love it. I just hope that roofline and headlights stay on the production version.
