New information coming straight from Mazda sources adds credence to previous suggestions that Mazda would return the next-gen MX-5 to its roots for the 2014 model year.
Previous reports by Leftlane already touched on the expectation to drop the curb weight by 720 lbs and increased efficiency through the use of Mazda’s new Skyactiv weight saving technology, but now Hirotaka Kanazawa, Mazda’s chief of research and development has told What Car? that “We will return to the original. It will be lightweight and the cost will be lightweight too. It will be easy to handle and fun to drive.”
The research chief also reiterated the use of Skyactiv technology, suggesting a final curb weight of just 2,200 lbs. A leaked patent drawing Leftlane previously reported also seemed to suggest a style that had a strong semblance to the original 1989 model.
What isn’t very old school, however, is how Mazda intends to deliver the power – as new rumors suggest Mazda will turn to a small displacement, turbocharged engine, rather than the naturally aspirated ones historically used in the MX-5. Odds are, though, most buyers won’t have any issue with the improved torque curve, peak power and reduced fuel consumption typically associated with turbocharging compared to a naturally aspirated offering.
Whatever route Mazda ends up taking, all suggestions point to a lightweight, fun to drive open-top car that harkens back to a simpler time in the world of autos.
