Frankfurt Preview: Mazda MX-5 Superlight concept

08/05/2009, 8:56 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Mazda will take an ultra sports-oriented concept, low-feature version of its popular MX-5 Miata roadster to next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Dubbed the MX-5 Superlight, the concept car harkens back to the days of open-top, ultra-sleek sports cars that made more sense on a track than as a daily driver.

Though Mazda hasn’t released any official details on the model, it did say that the concept car will be greener than a regular production model thanks to extensive weight-reducing efforts throughout. Mazda says that fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are both down.

The concept was styled at the automaker’s Frankfurt, Germany, studio and, according to Mazda, it’s intended to be a pure show car, not a production model.

Check back here in mid-September for Leftlane’s live coverage of the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Well I guess a helmet is in order if you don’t want bugs hitting your face at 60+mph…

I have to admit, there is something that is quite nice about it. The headrest perhaps?

It is nice to see that at least one automaker understands the concept of light sports car (well the second one, the first one is Lotus)

Borat . . . ditto.

GM . . . are you listening? No? Yer right, by all means, kill the Solstice and Sky!!! . . . morons.

Ford . . . well, you already know more than the other two in Detroit (if anyone even considers them remotely American anymore), so I really shouldn’t question you; however, a LOT of Leftlane posters do seem to be decrying the hefty weight-GAIN of the Mustang. Just a thought . . .

Lion, I was thinking that when Ford was designing/redesigning current ‘Tang the chief designers was enamored with Rosie O’Donnel. The same guy went to work for Chrysler and Chevy.

And i agree Lion, the Solstice Club Racer should have been put into production and that car should stick around in some form. Chevy Sting Ray woulda been nice.

Love it, though I’m mad they won’t be producing it. There should be more roadsters out there.

Mazda doesn’t have the balls anymore to sell something like this. And if they’re not going to then why bother with the show car in the first place? You’re just pissing people off by showing them what they can’t have even though it’s close enough to the production model to be a reality if they wanted to.
