Mazda officially rolled out its MX-5 Superlight at the Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday. Based on the recently updated MX-5, the Superlight concept essentially transforms the two-seater into a track-day speedster.
Most notably, the MX-5 Superlight concept does away with the standard MX-5’s windshield and retractable roof. Continuing that minimalists theme, Mazda also did away with most of the MX-5’s creature comforts, including carpeting and sound-deadening materials, air condition and radio – although the concept does feature an iPhone dock. Carbon fiber racing seats also help to keep weight in check.
The MX-5’s stock steering wheel and gauge cluster remains, although the car’s interior was given a thorough rework with brown leather and aluminum accents.
Under hood, the MX-5 Superlight Concept uses a 126 horsepower 1.8L engine. Although not the most powerful unit, the Concept’s 2,194 pound curb weight allows the speedster to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 8.9 seconds.
The MX-5 Superlight Concepts also benefits from a significant suspension and brake upgrade. Compared to the standard car, the concept’s track has been increased by 50mm and ride height lowered by 30mm. Thicker anti-roll bars were also installed front and rear. Seventeen-inch wheels shod in 205/45 rubber hide larger four-piston calipers and slotted rotors.
It remains unknown if the MX-5 Superlight Concept has any production value, but we should know more in just a few days.
