Why would anyone want to make a smaller car than a Miata? Duh, how about a Lotus Elise @ 1950lbs, Miata could lose some weight @ 2500lbs. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it but it will destory any small roadster GM can crap out.

I agree the need to make a new model to make a small Miata is just rediculous. Make the current miata smaller.

As for the Solstice-Sky. It has potential, but in its current form its is all show. The redline has power, but the suspension is way too soft for any sporting intensions.

I’m getting the odd feeling that this new MX-2 will look something like a Daihatsu Copen, if it plans to be smaller than the Miata. And if it ever does look something like THAT, heads will be rolling.

Again, the Solstice and Sky are pinnalces of perfection in the segment. They have outstanding quality, relibility, dependibility and respect amongst their class. In fact, they are a class of 1 as the competiton from cars like the Boxster, Z4, Nissan Z and S2000 are just cheap imitatiion piles of crap.

Try comprehending instead of glancing.

I really hope Penske keeps the Sky alive. Those are wonderful cars… powerful too… great competition for MX-5, Z4, and S2K.

It’s damn near impossible to find a RWD performance-oriented car with a 4-banger these days… even harder if you want something with a fixed roof.

I own a Solstice GXP and unless GM gets its s@## together its replacement will be Japanese. I agree with Raine man who the hell asked for these bigger cars. Every small car when restyled becomes bigger. Makes no sense .

The Solstice was ugly, the Sky was nice-looking but came with all the stigma of being a Saturn, also lets not mention the bargain basement plastics used on the interior of both, and now with both brands (Pontiac and Saturn) defunct, the roadster market essentially is down to the MX-5 and S2000 (also soon to be defunct, also very $$$)…..there you go mates. In other words, perfect time for Mazda to diversify its roadster portfolio and recapture the market.

What can be possibly smaller than the MX-5? That thing is really small. If your taller than 5’7, your screwed. now imagine being in something smaller where you have to be smaller than 5’0. I guess this will be the sports car for midgets.

And F.Y.I. NMOFGM, the solstice is under new ownership of Mr. Penske. Although its still built off the GM platform, its no longer a GM product.

With the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice being axed, Mazda has an opportunity to re-capture the roadster market. They really can’t miss out on this opportunity to re-create the MX-5 into something than can be seen as more than just a “chick-car.” The MX-2 can assume that old role, but a new MX-5 needs to be beefier and more appealing to a male audience.

What’s this? The once diminutive Miata has become fat in its old age… simply amazing.

I fail to understand the logic in this automotive trend that has really come to a head within the past 10 years.

Make it bigger! Crap… it’s too big. Quick! Make something smaller to fill the gap that the original car previously occupied.

Many automakers have this mastered perfectly. BMW X5… X3… X1! 3-series… 1-series! Honda Civic… Fit! Ford Taurus… Fusion!

What a wonderful thing that we have had to create a whole new class of “sub-compact” cars because the cars that started as “compact” are now “mid-size”. A 2010 Civic Sedan is the size of a 2000 Accord. It’s insanity!
