Mazda previews 2007 MX-5 Roadster Coupe

06/20/2006, 8:25 AM

By admin

Mazda today released teaser images of its much-rumored forthcoming Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe. The car features a powered roof, unlike the canvas-top version, which is manually operated. While it will use the “Roadster Coupe” name in Europe, its North American name will be a bit more of a tongue twister — “Mazda MX-5 (Miata) Power Retractable Hard Top.” The car is rumored to cost just $2,000 more than the canvas-top variant, and weigh only 75 lbs more. It will be fully unveiled at the British motor show in July. The automaker will also use the event to unveils its one-ton Mazda BT-50 truck. Gallery after the jump…

They need something to compete with the Solstice and Sky which are kicking Mazda’s butt in sales. Look it up if you don’t believe it.

I like the design. Very clean.

I really do not think the Solstice and Sky can match the MX-5 in refinement and build quality. I’ll bet if you drove all three for a decent stretch, when it came time to put your money on the table, you would opt for the Mazda. First year GM can be a quality nightmare.

Right now the Japs just do it better.

The Solstice is just light years away in styling but not sophistication and applied technologies which it will continue to trail the Miata. The Miata can’t seem to shake off its “hairdresser” car image largely to its styling.

Nice, but to me it seems as if this will render the soft top pointless….why would you want it since soft tops are notorious for molding and eventually needing to be replaced… I think this Miata (MX-5 or whatever the hell Mazada calls it this week) will probably sell better than its soft top sibling once sales are underway….

Miata is a wimpy hunk of crap. Buy a Solstice or Saturn if you want a real car. Buy a Miata if you are a stupid chick who works as a hairdresser

The Miata is only for gays or hairdressers? BS. The Miata, as canut4ever pointed out, is much ahead of the Solstice/Sky but can’t quite shake its stereotypes. The car has owned in the autocross and is also pretty damn good on the track.

just bought a miata, and wouldn’t consider the gm twins. IMO they are overstyled and underengineered, though, for gm it is remarkable progress. Generation 2 should be much better engineeringwise, with a functional trunk etc.

priceless ignorant, childish, anonymous comments by stupid people that have never driven either car to produce an intelligent, thought out response to both cars and would rather show how low IQ’s can really go on the internet!

An excellent update to a great vehicle. I’ll be ordering one, when they come out. Comparing this vehicle to GM’s offerings, the GM’s offerings have several missing capabilities and features, for example: a trunk that can be used for trips that are longer than a beer run. Feature for Feature the MX5 wins. Styling on the other hand is a personal choice.

I own a miata, but I considered buying a solstice first. I decided to go miata because I’m not required to get out of the car to put the roof up. How much would it suck to be driving and end up runnig around the car to put up the top while it’s poring down? By the time you get the roof out of its compartment and pin down the back two flaps you may as well have kept driving. Your soaked any way. The hard top is a great way to say “good bye” to expensive replacments of cloth tops, which for some reason jerks love to knife.

I Own a 2006 mx5. All of my straight friends are jealous. But then they are also intelligent as well. Clearly if you have driven 0ne then you also know why Mazda has been the leader in this category for years. Can’t wait for the “07″.

GM blows. It’s my money, so I’d prefer something that is engineered to last, like the Miata. And something that I don’t have to get out of to put the top up or down (Solstice).

As to car choice determining sexual preference, methinks thou dost protest too much, and that you may be a LITTLE TOO WORRIED about your own sexuality.
