Spied: 2010 Mazda RX-8

Spy photographers have spotted the 2010 Mazda RX-8 while out testing. Set to bow in the first quarter of 2009 as a 2010 model, the next-generation RX-8 should be sporting some significant upgrades. Changes will include new sheet metal and new powertrains — possibly including the 16X Renesis engine seen in the Taiki Concept.

Although details remain scarce on the next RX-8, it should retain its 2+2 seating and rear doors.

A convertible body style is also believed to be in the works for 2011 or 2012.

Just joshing.
So they’ll be removing the rear seats and making the wheelbase smaller?

Mazda is pretty stubborn about Wankel engine. I don’t see great attraction here and it is reminiscent of Honda and Toyota high revving I4s. Very little torque and there is no emotions below 4-5K rpm. Unlike I4 it is a thirsty beast. But the car does look good, not for the asking price. I fondly remember my friends RX7; was much more agile then my BMW. However after we sold/traded both cars I felt much wiser.

the rx-8 should be in s2000 territory with that new motor. If you blow out a renesis to 9 psi with a bolt-on, the rx-8 redlines at around 9000 and hits about 415 hp. There has to be a new following like the 3-rd gen, mazda has to tip their hat to the rotary lovers, i’m one of them

I HATE those front fenders. If it weren’t for that I might have considered buying one.

That camoflaged car is the same old RX-8 with blue headlights! Sales are down - way down. It’s a great design, but Mazda better do something - better. New look, better reliability, convertible version, lotsa turbo, materials that make the interior look less like a toy… something big.

I’m with jjt: the first gen RX-7 will always be, along with the 240Z, the finest original sports car visions to come from Japan.

Yeah it looks just like the current RX-8 to me. With some subtle differences. I do like the current look of the RX-8 though. I’m not a fan of rotary engines, gas costs me enough, I don’t want to have to be buying a quart of oil each month to satisfy it’s thirst. However if they give it more hp than they did with the current RX-8… Overall it’s a great car. But when it has some more hp maybe then I’ll look more into one.

The fact remains that the RX-8 destroyed every other car in SCCA in it’s class. It’s a great car, but lacks the punch of the 350z. With the new 16 engine in there this car will be amazing.

of course the RX8 doesn’t have the punch of a 350z, since that one produces up to 60-70hp more than the rx. give it a triple rotary for the sound and power and it will be quite sweet. since that is rather unlikely i’ll just wait for the new engine they design - as long as it is rotary i’m all game. rotary > piston anyday, you can ask any mechanic they’ll agree.
