The Mazda RX-8 may be getting a little long in the tooth, but the rotary-powered sports coupe remains one of the most tossable cars currently sold in the United States. That streak won’t continue for long, though, as the latest report indicates Mazda will yank the RX-8 from its North American lineup following the 2011 model year.
According to a new report by Motor Trend, Mazda has decided to stop North America sales of the RX-8 following the 2011 model year. Although Mazda has yet to officially comment on the subject, Motor Trend says it has the information on good authority from a “well placed source.”
Although a fantastic car in its own right, there likely won’t be a public outcry when the RX-8 finally goes. Mazda sold just 128 examples of the RX-8 in April, bringing the yearly sales total to 428 units.
Rumors have suggested an all-new RX-7 is under development, which could be the reason for the RX-8’s departure. As you’ll remember, the RX-7 exited Mazda dealers a full two years before the RX-8 appeared on the scene. The next-gen RX-7 has been tipped for a 2013 launch.
