Mazda has released its Ryuga concept to demonstrate the company’s new design direction. The concept’s name is Japanese for “gracious flow” expanding on the release of the Nagare concept, “flow” in Japanese, at the LA Auto Show.
The new concept is an exploratory design study according to Laurens van den Acker, design division general manager for Mazda Motor Corporation. Acker went on to explain that the Ryuga is “[...] more realistic than Nagare and therefore more useful in gauging reactions from those who see it.”
“Ryuga adds definition by incorporating a working interior, chassis and propulsion detail that were purposely absent from Nagare,” stated Laurens van den Acker during the concept’s introduction. Gallery after the jump…

The third pic is a nice shot. Makes it look really mean.
Other than that, looks like a toy to me.
seriously, this is way too over the top. Id understand if this concept was shown in 2018 or something at the auto show cuz thats when the vehicles will look like that, but not now as in 2007. Its really boring and lame.
I wonder whether with both doors open you can liftoff the ground at above three digit mph speeds?
since when was it necessary for companies to facelift their concepts more often than their production models
it is cool though
Gogo Mazda with making ridiculous concept cars when NONE of the elements, features, design language or technology reach production. Howbout making a concept car that has something real in it?
I like it, even if it is WAY out there. But it’s hard to see how any of the elements of this car could be applied to production vehicles, except maybe the general shape of it.
This is one of those cars that looks cool on the stand at the auto shows, but it’s hard to imagine it tooling down the highways and byways of the U.S.
Assuming that little or none of this makes it to production, I don’t understand what the point is of a car company producing a concept like this. It’s like, OK, so what if you can make a really cool looking car, if it’s totally irrelevant to the real world? How has it benefited the public or your company?
hey, its like concepts used to be, enjoy it.
concepts used to be outrageous and futuristic
now they are all near-production or pre-production.
Bravo to Mazda for giving us back a taste of what the future may hold.
Although nice, it’s just way too close to the Mazda Nagare concept shown in LA last month, and I doubt that any of the elements of either of those concepts will ever make their way into a production vehicle.
A4—-yeah, you’re right about that. I’m old enough to remember when concept cars were called “dream machines” and nobody expected them to make it to production. But I think all that changed when Dodge built the Viper pretty much unchanged from its concept form.
I really like the details on the side of this car, like the rising peaks of the fenders, and how the creases stamped into the sheet metal flow, as though they had been shaped by flowing water. I also really like the “duck tail” termination of the roof; aside from being nice to look at, I’m sure it’d be good for interior volume, and I suspect aerodynamics as well.
The ‘08 Tribute could have used some Ryuga!!!
Spiderman 4: On the highway there are no buildings! Spiderman’s only friend on the open fiels is his Mazda Ryuga!
and so on… you get the idea.
If they build it, I will buy it.
Hehe, this car is too cool. Just build it Mazda!
Yeah… build us something this slippery. NO MORE BOXES! FORD let them build their new RX-7 already!
Wow…another let down concept car coming soon
Love it. Build it. I’ll buy it. Can it be available in 2008. It’s refreshing to see a design this edgy and elegant. Cars today are incredibly boring, and the designs are slow to change. Non-gas fueling is critical. Please bring the Ryuga to market quickly. Great job.
