First introduced at last year's Tokyo show, the Mazda Takeri concept has now shown its face to the Old World at the Geneva Motor Show. The Takeri previews the look of the next-generation Mazda6 mid-size sedan and also showcases Mazda's efficient SkyActiv technologies.

Using the company's latest KODO design language, Mazda says the Takeri is designed to express "an intuitive sedan identity" and "an overwhelming emotional beauty." While the overall shape of the Takeri doesn't stray too far from the current 6, the concept differentiates itself with a number of effective details. Rising character lines create "hips" over the rear wheel wells, while the front fenders jut out from the hood in a manner that recalls the discontinued RX-8 sports car.

Up front, the grille ditches the "smiley-face" aesthetic that plagues a number of current Mazda models in favor of a more purposeful design similar to that of the new CX-5 crossover. With elongated taillamps joined by a chrome strip, the rear end bears more than a passing resemblance to the Hyundai Sonata.

Power for the Takeri is provided by Mazda's latest SKYACTIV-D diesel engine. No performance figures were given, but Mazda says the powertrain delivers "vigorous performance and a comfortable ride desired in a sedan." It remains to be seen if Mazda will offer its next-generation Mazda6 in the United States with a diesel engine.

The Takeri also boasts a few other SKYACTIV technologies, including Mazda's idling stop system, i-stop, and a new regenerative braking system.
