Mazda to produce Mazda6 coupe and convertible, performance model?

While the Mazda6 has been a success here in the U.S., the car — which wears the Atenza nameplate in Japan — isn’t getting very much attention in Japan. To combat this problem, Mazda is reportedly preparing a trio of JDM Mazda6 spin offs, which will include a coupe, cabriolet and a high-performance model.
According to 7tune.com, Mazda will also use BMW’s 3-series as a benchmark for quality. Apparently Mazda will also use the 3-series as a model of what body styles to offer as the Atenza lineup will now include a coupe, sedan, convertible and wagon — mirroring the 3-series’ offerings.
No word on powertrain offerings for the new models, but it is believed that the high-performance model will be dubbed the Mazdaspeed Atenza.
It also remains unclear if the new models will be sold in America. But with the all-new Mazda6 not even available in the U.S. yet, it appears we might have to wait a while until we hear if the new models are in our future.

The 6 is one of the cleanest and sportiest 4 doors on the street today. Maybe it should be a re-badged Ford for volume reasons.

4 seat convertibles rock, there just aren’t enough of them. Remember the 50s and 60s when American makers had plenty of them and many many different bodystyles for each model. Nowadays you have a choice of one Malibu and one Impala. I want sedans, coupes, wagons, hardtop sedans and coupes and wagons and convertibles, just like in the 1962 Impala range (did that range also have a bubbletop coupe as well?).
That Mazda looks nice

This is possibly the most exciting thing that can happen to the Mazda6. I certainly would buy one of the high performance convertibles. It does not look like a photoshop to me…I really hope they build it either way and that they bring it to the US

BuIld it!! i currently own a Mazda 6 2004 and boy do I love my car. Mazdas make good cars and i wouldn’t doubt this one either. The only thing i dont kinda like is that the coupe they had in one of the pictures which was the one in yellow looked almost like a sportier cobalt.

Mazda makes nice stuff, I’m suprised this doesn’t get any attention in Japan. People must be brainwashed into only buying Honda & Toyota over there too.

This is great. It’s definitely good to see the mazdaspeed version coming back. i had heard some speculation that it wouldn’t return for the new body style.
I too drive an ‘04 Mazda 6 3.0L and love it. It’s sporty, and powerful, but still nicely appointed and very affordable. I agree with zoom though that the yellow coupe that is pictured looks way too much like a cobalt. Hopefully it’s just the angle and color.

Good on Mazda. It might be a bit of a stretch to say they are already the Japanese BMW at least in spirit, but these new 6s certainly wouldn’t hurt those aspirations if that is indeed their goal.

Mazda already offers 3 bodystyles of the Atenza (4-door, 5-door, wagon) and it would be quite a stretch to expand it to 5! But a new MX-6 coupe/convertible would be sweet, as long as it doesn’t look like a 2-door Mazda6.

If you have proof that Ford made Mazdas V6 then please post a link
If it werent for Mazda Ford wouldnt have the Fusion Milan or MKZ
I know the Millenia had an engine similar to the Taurus and I know the Jag X type had a mazda derived engine

A convertible makes much more sense than a coupe which would cost only slightly less than the RX-8.

tripleonefive, the Mazda V6 is a Ford Duratec30 motor. It’s stamped right on the thing (I own one). Any countless number of sources will verify it, just type “Mazda6 Duratec” into Google (without the quotes). Mazda calls the V6 Duratecs their “AJ” series. It’s built in Ford’s Cleveland Engine plant. For about the last 10 years Mazda has relied on Ford for V6 technology (with the AJ replacing their horrible K-series motors) and Ford has relied on Mazda for i4 technology (the Duratec20/25 that replaced the Zetec is actually a Mazda-engineered but Ford-built motor).
The next-generation 3.5L may or may not be a Ford-built motor. It’s unknown at this time, but it will probably be Ford-built. Mazda now builds its own V6s in Japan that are modifed Duratecs (see the CX-9). But it’s highly unlikely to ship those from Japan to the US, when it can source the Duratec35 right here.

I think a Mazda6 coupe and convertible would be valued additions to Mazda’s lineup in the U.S. In fact, I would love to see the Mazda6 lineup consist of the sedan, wagon, coupe, and convertible. I would also love to see a coupe and convertible version of the next generation Mazda3 (to augment the sedan and 5-door). I hope Mazda doesn’t cheat the U.S. market by denying us the coupe and convertible versions of the Mazda6. I think these 2 configurations would do much to reinforce Mazda’s sporty “Zoom Zoom” image in the U.S.

I would love to see the coupe and convertible added to the US Mazda 6 line up, along with continuing the 5-door. But you can’t count on Ford getting the message. Witness the US only Mazda 6 they are getting ready to introduce. However they may be waking up given the news coming out of Left Lane News.
