^^^ A true sports car is required to be bad in the snow? I thought you read auto news to keep up with *current* trends.. there are these new-fangled gadgets called "traction control systems" that vastly improve snow performance on RWD vehicles. Then again, bad is a subjective term, so no matter how good it is, you could be one of those hard-to-please people. If so we have that in common. :)

Wanknonymous---

"Miata is a sports car, the BMW 3 series is a sports car, the GTi is a sports car, the Range Rover Sport is a Sports car"

Ummmmmm, no.

Miata is a sports car. BMW 3 series is a sports sedan (even the 2 door), GTI is a sporty hatchback, RR Sport is an SUV that happens to be fast.

Sports car requirements :

1. two seats (possible 2+2)
2. RWD based
3. handling/accelleration biased over ride/ practicality
4. emphsis on lightness and nimbleness
4. bad in snow
5. poor utility
6. fun

I think that pretty much nails it, e.g. Not even all Ferraris are sports cars, some are GTs.

I agree with anonymous. I just remember when a "sports car" was something along the lines of a Corvette, E-Type Jag, Cobra, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche. These were cars that one aspired to own, something that was a high-end all out performance car. Now the advertisers call anything thet even remotely looks sporty a sports car. Do people really believe the advertisers and media? These are just sales gimmicks. Come on, when an SUV, a pickup or an "econo box" is truely considered a sports car, that is the day when people have just plain given up their ambitions and have become media tools.

As far as I am concerned Mazda does a very good job of injecting some sportiness into all of their cars. Every mazda I have ever driven was pretty sporty driving and they all look good. Even that Mazda 5 looks great.

The 6 wagon is an ideal SUV replacment if you don't have heavy towing to do. According to CarsDirect, there's about $5k in total incentives available on that car. That's a steal IMO......

Oh, and anonymous, pretty much anything can be the 'sports car' of their genre......

1952 MG TD you are just too easy to wind up, that was such an obvious dig at Caliber lovers that every one else ignored it.
Baby the Caliber is shit, and is being bought by morons, you should know that! There was no need to be so rude to Farkinal, it makes you look like you think the Caliber is the best car EVER. I know you have a Stratus and like DC product but this Caliber worship is taking it a bit too far

What happens if, as is the case with the Caliber, the manufacturer has to discount so much and sell the car at a loss? Isn't that illegal?

There was some article months ago that that most european makes offer incentives equal to or greater than most domestics they just do it in the form of subvened leases instead of rebates. I mean how else could you lease a 65,000 dollar R-500 for 450 a month or a 50,000 dollar XC90 for 399 a month? BMW is bad about that too a 55,000 dollar X5 for 459 a month.

I think that this is a good move. Now if we can just get them to stop advertising ALL of their vehicles as Sports-Bred. A minivan IS NOT a sports car! A truck IS NOT a sports car! An econo-box IS NOT a sports car! Only the RX-8 can be considered a sports car, given their current line-up. My daughters Protege, while a good and reliable car, is a classic example of an econo-box. It does not have the "soul of a sports car."

Good instead of using incentives they should just price the car so it will be competitive without the incentives.
Oh yeah and Brandon, they can't stand giving away profits like that. Sometimes though they'll just jack up the original price and throw in incentives to make it FEEL like your getting a better deal, while you may not be.

This is a smart move. Now, Ford, GM, and Diamler Chrysler should follow - esp. GM. I recently saw a commercial for $4500 in cash and other incentives on a GM SUV. How does GM stand to profit giving away money like that?

Good for them. Now if the rest of ford could figure this out. Price the cars competively and if the MSRP needs to be reduced to keep the car competitive then do it.
