The 2008 Mazda tribute first went on sale in March of 2007. The 2008 Tribute was significantly redesigned from the 2007 model that preceded it. Mazda had originally intended to name the 2008 model the CX-5 to designate it as Mazda's entry level SUV, below the midsize CX-7 and flagship crossover CX-9, but instead opted to retain the Tribute name. The Tribute has been on the market since 2001 and received its first refresh in 2005. The 2008 redesign is much more comprehensive than the one in 05 where only minor items were changed such as engine options and the location of the gear selector. The 2008 model still rides the same Mazda 626 platform the tribute originally debuted with.

The tribute was the result of a joint-venture with Mazda's parent company ford. The overall design of the SUV has always been shared with the Ford Escape and the more upscale Mercury Mariner. The 2008 refresh of all three models makes their common heritage even more obvious, whereas in previous years there was less resemblance between the models. As with previous years the Tribute retains its stiffer suspension to maintain Mazda's sporty image.

The 2008 redesign gave the tribute an entirely new exterior look and a completely revamped interior. The engines from 2007 were carried over for to the redesigned model. The Tribute takes some naming queues from the Mazda6 utilizing " i " and " s " monikers to designate which engine is under the hood. Perspective Tribute owners have their choice between a 153 horsepower 2.3 liter four-cylinder engine which comes with models dubbed " i " and an " s " model which comes with a 3.0 liter V6 model providing 200 horsepower. Most other vehicles in this small SUV segment have similar four-cylinder or V6 engine options available. The Tribute's main competition comes from the Toyota RAV4, the Hyundai Tucson, and of course its Ford and Mercury half-brothers.

Like other Mazda models the Tribute has three trim levels available. A base "Sport" trim, an upgraded "Touring" trim, and the top of the line "Grand Touring" trim are offered. The standard drive train for the Tribute is front wheel drive. An electronic four-wheel drive option is available with any trim level as well. Standard safety features consist of six airbags, stability and traction control systems, and Anti-lock brakes with brake force distribution. It should be noted that in order to cut cost, Mazda has utilized rear drum brakes on all 2008 models.

The Sport trim includes 16" alloy wheels, fog lamps, and full power options as standard equipment. Stepping up to the Touring model will bring a roof rack, heated mirrors and seats, a powered driver's seat, and some extra cabin storage. The Grand Touring models add leather seats, automatic headlamps, a moonroof, and a six disk CD changer. The Tribute offers only two option packages. For four-cylinder " i " models, a class II towing package is offered that will add a hitch and trailer pre-wiring. This package allows for a 3,500lb towing capacity. The second package is available only on Touring models as its features are standard on Grand Touring models. This package includes a six-disc CD changer with seven speakers and rear cargo area cover.
