Mazda2 3-door hatchback debuts (updated)

03/04/2008, 9:30 AM

By admin

The first ever three-door Mazda2 hatchback debuted today at the Geneva auto show, following a teaser image from January. Up until now, the Mazda2 has only ever been offered as a five-door hatch or four-door sedan, both of which were redesigned for the 2008 model year.

It’s not known if any of the Mazda2 variants will be sold in the United States. That said, it’s more likely the three-door hatchback will be sold here than the five-door variant. The next-generation Ford Fiesta, which is based on the Mazda2, is already expected to come to America.

Like the five-door, this latest Mazda2 model is offered with 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter gasoline engines, or a 1.4-liter turbo diesel. The three-door Mazda2 shares the same overall dimensions as the five-door and achieves a similarly modest curb weight.

Mazda2 three-door’s superior passive safety package includes six airbags (depending on grade), ABS, electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist, and DSC stability control.

It’s a cool design, Mini-sized and could get Speed hop up. I like it.

Or just a Ford Ka.

This thing looks great! Ford Verve aside, Mazda has a knack for making even an econobox look sporty. Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it has to LOOK cheap i.e. Yaris.

If you look around the window line and b pillar, you can see this is a fake.

However, something that looks like this would do better in the States than other Mazda2 variants. Americans are fine with small 2-door hatchbacks because idiot American teenagers love to grab up these cars cheap and throw crappy wings and rims on to delude themselves that their little 4-banger with an economy-geared 5-speed manual is a race car. (See previous generations of Civics, Suzukis and Focus’s for prime examples)

As a 4-door compact commuter though, not so much.

Ahura – it could be. But for some reason I think there will be a 3 door Mazda2 and I can’t imagine it looking like anything else but that

Ironhide is right. This is the kind of classy urban minicar that an affluent person might keep in London or Munich. Helped by the Mini Cooper, the US market is getting to the point where there’s less stigma associated with a small car. I can see commuting in a Mazda 2.

…can’t wait to see any car of this class on one of those police pursuit shows getting punted in a PIT maneuver by a Crown Vic.

Commodore, I can’t think why Mazda would design a rounded sideswindow for a new Mazda. That has nothing to do with their new style

Mazda does some good things design wise, all around really. They’re something Ford can be proud its associated with. Nice little car though.

Considering the rapidly changing market conditions in the U.S., I still can’t understand Mazda’s reluctance to bring this car over here. This seems like a perfect opportunity for Mazda to expand in the U.S. market. It’s a great design that puts almost everything else in its segment to shame (although the upcoming Verve/Fiesta design looks very promising). I say bring over all three versions and see if they will sell.

A 5-door would compete against the Honda Fit, Chevy Aveo, Nissan Versa, and Scion xD. This should be an interesting segment.

Looks awesome. Kills the YAris, and maybe the new Fit too. I’d buy it if I were in the market for a minicar

It’s a Mazda and you can pretty much count on handling, reliability and good look. Hands down, this is a winner, now bring it state-side!

I love Mazdas, but, I think I like the Ford Verve(Fiesta) a bit more than the Mazda 2. But, if this came over here with that 1.4 liter turbo-diesel, I’d be sold!

Funny now Ford is worrying about duplicating product between Ford and Mazda. You didn’t care to produce 4 variants of mid-size cars (Mazda6, Fusion, Milan, MKZ). Same thing with the SUV, Truck etc. So now you are using the Verve as an excuse not to bring the 5-door Mazda2. Makes no sense!

to start the sedan, five door and three door should be all in the state to fight the market on every level because it would not hurt to do so.it this was an the us market the yaris, fit, aveo, versa, and the little know about xd sales will slow.the only reason poeple buy fords and mazda because they think that they are getting just an little bit of what the europeans are getting .so just bring them the real thing not so watered down version. watering everything down is the reason why ford is in this big **** plie of problems. so dont bull **** the us market again. learn who to make some money an sale cars just by bring them to the states

Since they couldn’t get VW to agree to using the New Beetle, this is what they should use for a Transformers Alternators Bumblebee (Binaltech Bumble). It would totally work, and they could use the Genki model as Cliffjumper.
