2011 Mazda2: U.S. availability confirmed

09/17/2009, 7:12 PM

By Nick Aziz

We’ve long suspected it, but now it’s official. The 2011 Mazda2 will be offered in North America starting in late 2010. Mazda North America’s CEO, Jim O’Sullivan, made the announcement during a meeting of the company’s top dealers on Friday. He said the U.S. version(s) of the car will be unveiled at the LA auto show in December.

“You’ve asked us for it for a while now, and we’ve been studying the market to make sure we can make a business case for it across North America,” O’Sullivan told the dealers. “As consumers’ tastes and attitudes toward small vehicles have changed, we now believe strongly there is a place in our lineup for a car below our current least-expensive car, the Mazda3. Mazda2 will be true to everything that makes our cars stand apart from the competition: it will be stylish, fun-to-drive and a heck of a value.”

No further details were released at the meeting. Information on specifications, content, pricing and on-sale timing will be provided closer to launch.

Around the world, the Mazda2 is offered in sedan, three-door hatch, and five-door hatch configurations. It’s not known which variants will make it to U.S. shores.

I heard rumors of two more smaller Mazdas coming, as well. The Mazda 1 is a motorcycle, and the Mazda 0 is a bicycle. There may even be a Mazda .5, which is rumored to be a scooter.

I like the funky interior. It has a lot of character.

I think I still prefer my Fiesta :)

But maybe Ford will use the 3-door Mazda 2 sales to gauge interest in a 3-door fiesta variant…

I wonder how much cargo space the hatch will have. If it can’t carry a duffel bag, 1 piece of check-on luggage, and 1 carry-on…

…I’d have to pass.

Don’t wait up for the sedan to make the trip, but this is good news
Look at the bolsters on those seats!
Expect $12-$17k pricing, in line with cars like Toyota Yaris

I’m a little surprised.. but it makes sense if they plan to build the US models alongside the Fiesta in Mexico.. considering they are the same vehicle underneath. Wonder if Mazda will bring the sedan as well.. for some reason I think the two hatches would be a better fit for Mazda’s “Zoom-Zoom” image.. but it does look better than the Fiesta version.

The only reason why Mazda is able to do this now is because they’ve separated themselves from Ford. I don’t believe Ford would have permitted this

Mazdaspeed this with racing seats and other crap and they may sell a few. I raced a mazdaspeed3 and sat on it’s face with my 350z. I could have sworn the 4 bang turbo would have put up a little fight but no go on that bet. It’s ok speed isn’t everything. This is cute if I wasn’t such a tuff guy.

So, it’s only one model 5-door hatch with 1.5-liter engine, according to this source:

“Automotive News [sub] reports that the Mazda2 (Demio in Japan) has been approved for a Fall 2010 launch in the US market. Mazda is clearly targeting the Honda Fit’s recent success, with only the 5-door, 1.5 liter version approved for the US. The stateside rollout will also coincide with a mid-cycle refresh, which means the interior will be improved over the current European version. Unfortunately, this also means the 2 will be saddled with Mazda’s new Pikachu-on-SSRIs grin.”

Bimmer, they pay a lot of guys who still live at home with their parents to crunch numbers and come up with these grandiose decisions. They’re easy to recognize. Wait until it’s dark and if you can still see their pasty white glow then hope to hell you remembered to pack your wooden stake along with your Twinkie that morning.

This and the Fiesta are like the only two decent looking small vehicles on the road.

Although, there is one thing I am disappointed in. The prev gen had projector headlamps, and all Mazdas, save for the Tribute have them. I wonder why they ditched them on this model?

These hatchbacks look pretty good in person running around Europe. I’ve never come across a sedan version. I have a feeling a Mazda2 sedan will be as much a yawn as the Ford Fiesta sedan. Stick to the hatches

I like the 3-door, but that’s just because I like Coupes in general, except for the Accord coupe. Now, in all reality, Mazda should just bring the 5-door if they HAVE to choose, since who’s really going to buy this? Women with little kids or old people. Now if they could bring over both, I would have the 3-door there in smaller quanities.

This should have been over here 2 years ago – that’s there fault. Gas prices had been expensive before AND competitors like Toyota Yaris and Chevy Aveo had already caught on somewhat, so why the hold up Mazda?

According to MazdaUSA.com, the Mazda 3 starts at just over $16,000. That means the 2 is going to start below that, which could be around $12,000. Let’s see what kind of features it has when it arrives. I like the design, but if it has no AC, no radio and no airbags for that price, no thanks. I think they will make it good, though.
