The Mazda3 is based on the Ford C1 platform, which also serves as the basis for a number of Volvo models, including the S40, V50, C70 and C30. All Mazda3s are built in Japan.
The Mazda3 hatchback has nearly 44 cubic feet of cargo volume with the split-folding rear seats in the down position. The cargo area also includes a retractable cover.
Like the new sedan, the hatchback is a little longer than its predecessor. The added length translates to more interior space. The Mazda3 hatchback has nearly 44 cubic feet of cargo volume with the split-folding rear seats in the down position. The cargo area also includes a retractable cover.
Underhood, the new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is borrowed from the larger Mazda6i and will offer 167 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 168 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Like its predecessor, the model offered in the United States and Canada will not be equipped with the smaller 2.0 liter engine standard in the sedan. Both powertrains feature a new catalyst developed with single nanotechnology that significantly cuts down on the amount of platinum and palladium necessary.
Exterior styling is obviously derivative of the outgoing model, though all body panels are new and most of the car, aft of the windshield, is exclusive to the hatchback.
Inside, it appears that the hatchback interior will be identical to the sedan, which features a more cohesive design than its predecessor as well as a number of class-exclusive luxury features. Mazda confirmed that the hatchback will be offered with Bluetooth connectivity, adaptive Bi-Xenon headlamps, an advanced keyless entry system and push-button start.

Hatchbacks are available in three trims, Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Sports come with 17 inch alloy wheels, six airbags, antilock brakes, steering wheel-mounted radio controls, a CD player with an auxiliary input, a leather wrapped steering wheel and a height-adjustable driver's seat. The Touring adds traction and stability control. Grand Tourings up the ante with leather, heated seats, Xenon headlamps, a trip computer, rain-sensing wipers and automatic climate control.
Optional on all is a Moonroof and 6-CD package, which, expectedly, adds a moonroof and and in-dash CD changer. Grand Tourings with this package also get Bose speakers.
Other options include a navigation system, leather seats for Tourings, the CD changer on its own and remote engine start.
