Mazda has unveiled its Mazda3 MPS Extreme at the Sydney Motor Show. Based on the popular Mazda3, the MPS has been tuned by Mazda’s Australia Motorsport manager, Allan Horsley, to produce 281 horsepower and 313 lb-ft of torque from the car’s 2.3-liter DISI turbo engine. Mazda didn’t release any updated performance stats but did say that the upgrades should be good for about a 20% improvement in performance.
The Mazda3 MPS also includes a free-flowing two-inch exhaust system and a revised suspension that sits 25 mm lower than the standard model. Wheels are upgraded from 18 inch alloys to 19 inch BBS Motorsport wheels.
The exterior of the Mazda3 MPS is finished in red paint with black stripes along the hood and rear fenders, as well as a black roof.

I’ve always liked the Mazdaspeed3. Anything that makes that little car even more of a rocket is fine by me. I don’t like the exterior changes, though.

Very nice. I would like to see that car with AWD. They’ve made it for the Mazadaspeed6. That could get the thing more interesting…

Wow, and I thought the MS 3 rocked here. They would have to lower the first couple of gears like they did on MS 3 to keep traction. I think if you add AWD it’s going to become become too heavy and expensive. The thing about the MS 3 is that it’s only a couple of thousands above a GT version of the basic car. So for less than a Deluxe Mustang GT you can have a great little sports car with usable cargo space.

Yeah, but it can’t get the bloody power down. You’ll just experience 280 hp ripping your arms off with the torque steer. It needs RWD or 4WD!! Just face it Mazda.
A Saab engineer (Saabs are the kings of front-drive turbo repmobiles) said the maximum amount of power which could possibly go through the front wheels is around 225hp. He then went off to put 250hp in the Saab 95.

I think that if the MSP3 had AWD it would be a faster car, aside from handling better, because Mazda can revise the gear ratios due to the added traction.
not to mention the fact that the 0-60 times will greatly improve, making the car more appealing from a marketing perspective.

Interesting version of a Mazda3. I hope this version comes to the United States with all wheel drive. The engine used in this car should be used in all Mazda’s cars.

Austrailia has roads with no speed limits, so I think they should get some wicked fast cars.
Too much horsepower in a FWD?!?! Spoken by people who only think of launching. Horse power is also great for top speed, passing, corner exits, on ramps, off ramps etc.

@jonnycat,
You will have to be gentle on cornering if you don’t want to understeer. It’s not that I dont like FWD cars but RWD and AWD handle better… the car is more “balanced” by design. And if the car doesn’t have LSD, power will tend to one wheel, so you will lose some power.

Is that FWD? Thats the only thing that holds me back from getting this car… 281hp on FWD, it doesn’t work in my head.

Knowing some people who own the Mazdaspeed3 here in the states, I can tell you that they need to make it an AWD vehicle. The software required to make this thing drivable is astounding. They cut the boost levels in the first three gears and at highway speeds so the torque steer doesn’t pull the car off the road.

all you idiots that said this is cooler than the mazdaspeed3… NO ****! The mazdaspeed3 is identical to the Mazda MPS, so therefore the MPS Extreme is essentially a Mazdaspeed3 Extreme.

i just want to clear a few things up for you guys, in the great land down under (AUSTRALIA).yes, this vehicle needs to be either fwd or awd, we don’t get all the great cars from the U.S. or elsewhere, our mazda6’s are only the 2.3 sized engines we didn’t get the 3.0 v6 version, why do you think we had to screw the ass out of this to make it move. yes some of our roads are unrestricted speed limits, but they are in the top end, NT,where the roads are made for roadtrains,(semi’s with three trailers hooked up to them) the roads are rough and not suitable for hootin’ along.our top speed limit is 110 klm. you know we wouldn’t have minded to see a few dodge/chrysler prowlers down our way. not everything is as rosey as it seems, we only get half of the chrysler range here at present, none of the U.S. G.M.range, but by the way you speak of them we would not want them.
