Mazda6 hatchback and sport wagon

10/24/2007, 10:02 AM

By Drew Johnson

Mazda has unveiled its Atenza — known as the Mazda6 in the U.S. market — five-door hatchback and sport wagon at the Tokyo Motor Show. Both models are based on the Atenza sedan — shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year — and are available with either a 2.0L or 2.5L four-cylinder engine.

While the sedan will make it to U.S. shores, it remains unknown if Mazda will offer the hatchback and sport wagon here.

Mazda makes the best looking wagons on the road. I really hope they sell it here.

Looks great, just tone down those silly tail lights and ditch the (hopefully optional) rear wing. Also, what is up with the huge speaker enclosures on the doors?

Both look great. And much more exciting (and reliable) than Toyotas:
http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=678203 <– 600,000 car recall (of course they are trying to say that its not a recall, but the mailing letter to the owners, covering the repair costs, and everything else the article mentions is pretty in line with what a recall is. Toyota just doesn’t want ANOTHER 600,000 cars to be added to its recall list because then it would be #1 in recalls)

Ricardo, I think Audi makes the best looking wagons on the road. Holden’s new Commodore wagon also wasn’t bad AT ALL.

i LOVE it! The new mazda 6 takes over as my favorite car in this category, knocking the Legacy from the #1 spot on my list. Looks fantastic

Gosh, I LOVE this car!! I’ve already owned a 2004 Mazda6 5-door and a 2006 5-door in red. They just look good on the road, you know?

This one is just plain awesome. Going to be very hard for me not to trade in mine!

If you’re under 50 years old, why would you get a Camcord over this?

One thing I just noticed I don’t like: The front overhang viewed from the side, on either the hatchback or the wagon.

Nice looking, but as a model line-up it’s still a step backwards until the Mazdaspeed6 returns.

That wagon looks sweet! I love the taillights and it fits right in line with the crossovers.

This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for- the new Mazda6. D*mn this looks good! I agree Ricardo/Brendino, Mazda does make the best wagons. I hope they bring all 3 here to the U.S. I don’t see why not, they have them now.

I agree Lambo.. the front end looks a little heavy. is this the Euro model designed to meet the pedestrian standard, or is this the “kill’em on the sidewalk” U.S. model?

Once again, Mazda trumps parent Ford with a car similar in style to their own Mondeo that we’ll unfortunately never see. Nicely done, Mazda!

HoosierHero.. unfortunately, Mazda USA stopped selling the 6 wagon for 2008.. they probably think there’s too much overlap with the 5, CX-7 and CX-9. I really hope the hatchback continues at least.. though this is truly the best looking 6 wagon EVER!

Looks great! Mazda should bring all 3 variants over to the U.S. I usually don’t like wagons, but this one rocks!

LamboZ, I agree about the front overhang, it seems a bit heavy to me. I like both cars overall though; more so maybe than the 5. The fender “flares” look better to me than the 5’s which seem a little forced, to me anyway.

Lambo- yep, go Hoosiers! :) autonut- I forgot about that. I guess I’ll have to hope for the overlap though. Mazda6 wagon is much better than the 5 IMO…
