Gordon Murray, the designer of the McLaren F1, which was the fastest production car for over a decade until the Bugatti Veyron dethroned it, is reportedly working on a new, lightweight supercar. Gordon Murray Design would like the supercar to be compact and lightweight, with power coming from a small displacement engine, resulting in low emissions.
Earlier this year, Caparo , one of the investors in Gordon Murray Design, announced plans to build street-legal versions of its T1 track car and a small city car, code-named T25. The new car may not necessarily be based on or in any way similar to the T1, and unlike the city car, it may be marketed and sold by the company, most likely under the Caparo badge.
“We wouldn’t necessarily sell on the supercar for someone else to make,†Murray said in an Autocar report.
The same production methods as used in the T25 are expected for the new supercar, including a rigid frame that may use a material other than pressed steel and body panels made from recycled plastic. It is also not known whether the car will use a front, mid or rear engine configuration, though nothing says supercar like a mid-ship mounted powerplant.
