With its P11 sports car expected to be launched some time next year, British performance car maker McLaren is not wasting any time in moving ahead with development of another new model. According to a new report, the automaker is in the early stages of developing a successor the famous F1.
While the P11 is expected to rival the Ferrari F450 and Lamborghini Gallardo LP560, there remains plenty of room in the higher-end space for a more exotic model.
“We have just started looking at doing another F1. It is a clean sheet design,” a source told Autocar. The British publication describes the insider as a “high-ranking official with intimate knowledge of the company’s secret business plan.”
With production of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren winding down, the P11 is expected to arrive just in time to keep the storied badge in the public eye. As for the new F1, it is likely years away. It is expected to rival the likes of the Bugatti Veyron and Koenigsegg CCX.
“The P11 is just the beginning,” said the insider. “There will be other models in the longer term.”

Ah yes…another F1. Good. It’s the greatest super-ultra-exotic sportscar ever made…it’s about time someone showed these guys that you don’t need 20 turbos to make a car go fast.

the F1 was overrated, it was fast in a straight line , but tricky in corners. the Dauer 962 Le Mans was the best ultra-exotic-sportscar ever . it was basically a Le Mans car for the road based on the Porsche 962 , 0-100 km/h in 2.6 sec , top speed 404 km/h (251 mph) , but only 50 were built so it wasn’t considered a real production car.

All i want to know is WHAT TOOK THEM SO LONG?
I mean, the SLR was an incredible car, but let’s be honest, it was no F1…
In fact, nothing seems to have come close to the F1 for years

How is the F1 overrated? It’s STILL the world’s fastest naturally aspirated car. This car still deserves the respect and praise it was getting nearly a decade ago.

McLaren may be the eternal optimist. I’m assuming that most of McLaren’s moolah is made in motorsports (are they involved in anything besides Formula One?), and that their road are basically side projects. The volume we’re talking about could probably never be enough to make *that* much money.
Still, building road cars with the entry level car being competitors for the F450 and LP560 (both of which will and can give the McLaren F1 a run for its money) may be a bit optimistic. Motorsports’ budgets are being slashed and the demand for the ultra exotic car has been waning. I wonder how viable McLaren is going to be if part of its capital and R&D budget is siphoned off to build hyper exotic road cars.

You can’t improve upon perfection. McLaren are risking diluting the F1’s legend status if its successor fails to surpass the F1’s lofty capabilities.
