McLaren F2: The Sequel?

07/02/2007, 11:42 AM

By Andrew Ganz

McLaren F2 prototypes are already on the road in the United Kingdom, according to British car magazine Autocar. The F2 is a much-anticipated follow-up to McLaren’s F1 supercar of the early ’90s, a legend the day it was introduced.

The F2 — shown right in an artist’s illustration — is apparently the result of an aborted collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. After the launch of the SLR, the Germans wanted McLaren to create a less expensive, mid-engined supercar. The project, codnamed P8, was put on hold in late 2004 due to quality woes in Mercedes’ high production models and, possibly, due to the SLR’s poor sales figures.

McLaren and Mercedes-Benz recently decided to part ways in the design of future supercars. As previously reported, Mercedes will work with racing partner H.W.A. to build a rival to the Audi R8, rather than building a sucessor to the $450,000+ SLR.

I hope this will be a Veyron killer.

^^ I would imagine this very well could be a Veyron killer. The beauty behind the Veyron is it’s ability to be the (or was?) fastest production car while offering the level of luxury that it does. Maintain a similar power to weight ratio while cutting out the fat.

The P8 is to be less expensive; it’ll go after F430, Gallardo, 911, etc… I don’t think anybody could possibly build a successor to the Veyron; it cost way too much to develop and they will never be a pay off.

LOL what prayers, we would probably never own one or a Veyron for different reasons.

judging from the looks it looks like it will hunting down the 911, gallardo, f430, vette e.t.c. but if its a replacement for the mclaren F1 then that will be very very hard to top.

EGGcellent. Time to tell stupid Veyron-lovers that their days are numbered, you’re all going DOWN mofo’s! McLaren will show you how to design and produce a REAL supercar. Do it with style or don’t bother doing it at all! :-p

This is very very very good news.

One question though– didn’t “McLaren F1″ have the “F1″ to denote their expertise in F1 RACING? Why call it an “F2″?
