Very few super cars have ever skated under the United State’s gas-guzzler tax, but McLaren’s MP4-12C has just done that – the 592 horsepower exotic won’t be subject to the EPA’s tax when it hits our shores next January.
The EPA has officially rated the 2012 McLaren MP4-12C at 15mpg city and 22mpg highway and, while not the most efficient car on the road, is not subject to a gas-guzzler tax. In comparison, the Ferrari 458 Italia is rated at 12/18mpg city/highway and is including in the EPA’s gas-guzzler tax.
Although it’s doubtful the MP4-12C’s fuel economy will sway any buyers, the company is proud to have another feather in its cap.
“It was a big achievement,” Tony Joseph, director of McLaren’s North American Operation, told Inside Line. “(Gas prices) are not a buying consideration, but it allows us to say we’re an innovative company.”
Joseph also confirmed that the U.S. Launch of the MP4-12C has been pushed back to January. The car was originally scheduled to hit our shores in late summer, but McLaren delayed that launch to address some quality issues.
“We’ve had minor issues, mostly electrical,” he explained. “We have a fix for all of the issues. When they launched the car in Europe and the U.K., the initial cars had some quality issues.”
McLaren has reserved 500 units of the MP4-12C for the United States, but the car is already sold out through the 2012 model year.
