Mercedes adds powerful S 420 CDI diesel to S-Class lineup

12/06/2006, 6:40 PM

By admin

Mercedes today announced it would add a new diesel variant to is S-Class range for the coming model year. The new eight-cylinder model is powered by a state-of-the-art V8 CDI engine developing 320 hp and 538 pound-feet of peak torque.

The S 420 CDI powers from 0 – 62 mph in 6.6 seconds and goes on to reach 155 mph (electronically governed). During normal city and highway driving, it can deliver fuel consumption figures of nearly 25 mpg.

The new S 420 CDI is available in Europe to order now, with deliveries to customers due to start in December 2006. Unfortunately, emissions regulations will likely prevent this non-Bluetec diesel from coming stateside.

My gas powered A8 gets 28mpg highway. I’m shocked this doesn’t get better mileage. Audi’s diesel A8 was featured on Top Gear to see if they could drive across the country and back (essentially… i dont really recall the route) on one tank of gas, which they did.

the GS430 gets 18/25. This is no accomplishment by Benz. Diesels are not the future.

GS? You mean the Camry…oh sorry “Lexus” that is made of lightweight materials? Wow 18/25 EPA estimates. Really great.

I agree however that this is not an accomplishment. How is it state of the art? It doesn’t meet the US requirements. Where’s the bluetec urea engines???

There are more modern diesel engines than this, even from MB. And those are the future.

It said mixed driving, not just highway. So I’d say the figures could be something like 23/30

This engine is a old design like the 2.2ltr which has been going for years. The V6 was besically a brand new design going from straight six to V6. That engine is regarded as the best 6-cylinder Diesel on the market and hopefully the next generation V8 will be based around the V6.

The V12 Diesel coming soon will be two of the V6 bolted together to form a V12 which should make it one of the best in class. Estimated 6LTR with around 470-500BHP and 800ft of torque.

320 hp and 538 pound-feet of peak torque is impressive no matter how you much you want to bash it. Especially when it is attached to those fuel economy numbers.

The A8 TDI is not only a better performer but after a couple of years you can also buy 2 of them for the price of 1 Benz. There’s a reason for that, trust me…

Some you people need to go back to reading comp 101…

“During normal city and highway driving, it can deliver fuel consumption figures of nearly 25 mpg.”

So figure about 20-22 City and 28-32 Highway.
