In recent weeks, we’ve reported on Mercedes‘ so-called AMG offensive, which will involve the launch of several new AMG products over the next year. AutoWeek got a chance o talk to AMG’s new chairman Volker Mornhinweg about the company’s plans. He confirmed that the AMG division with phase out its 5.5-liter V8 engine, and focus its efforts on the the 6.3-liter V8 and the turbocharged 6.0-liter V12. For the time being, the G-Class will retain the 5.5-liter engine. The SLK-Class may get an increased-output 5.5-liter, or it may get the new 6.3 V8. On the topic of transmissions, Mornhinweg said AMG was looking at a dual-clutch system, but he emphasized no such option will be available in the next year. He said there has been very little demand for four-wheel-drive, but “we could react very quickly if the market changes.” It was a similar story with diesels, hybrids, and an AMG V6 — demand is weak, but the possibility remains if the need arises.
