Mercedes B-Class spawns small hatchback, cabrio?

07/13/2007, 12:55 PM

By Andrew Ganz

With the inevitable demise of its small A-Class, Mercedes-Benz is debating how it wants to compete in the small car market. The latest reports suggest that Mercedes will introduce coupe and convertible versions of its B-Class small car, which is sold in most of the world, including Canada, but not the United States.

German publication AutoBild is reporting that Mercedes is considering development of a hatchback and a “BLK” roadster based off of the B-Class platform. The current B-Class is a tall, front-wheel drive, five-door “sports tourer,” in Mercedes-speak. Mercedes could potentially develop the platform to better compete with the BMW 1-Series, which is offered in more traditional car-style forms.

The magazine is also reporting that Mercedes could base these small cars off of the larger rear-wheel drive C-Class platform, which would allow larger engines, something that would be favored in North America.

I dunno, CTS, economy car looks at a premium price, with premium price on service, too? I think that’s why MB failed with the last C coupe.

Not my cup of tee (cq) don’t know why I even bother reading these MBZ articles.

I’d rank them thus

1 1 series
2 A3
3 B series
4 Versa
5 Aveo — not a bad car, i rented one, and it gets up to 85 without much fuss.
6 Yaris
7 Fit

Ok, Bliss, MB is my favorite carmaker too, but I’ve had about enough of your contentless, case-challenged dribble. They are not “ahead of the game at all times.” That is a hyperbolic non sequitur and you know it.
