As expected, the exterior of the latest A-Class closely resembles that of the A-Class concept shown at last year's Shanghai Auto. Arguably the most striking features are a pair of character lines (similar to those on the new B-Class) running along the sides of the car, dressing up what is otherwise a fairly conventional hatchback profile. Up front, the grille houses an extra-large rendition of Mercedes' three-pointed star badge, while a pair of vents aft of the the rear wheel wells add a sporty touch around back.
Upscale Cabin
The cabin is a significant upgrade over the outgoing car in terms of both materials and design. Classy circular air vents (which are becoming a common sight on Mercedes models from the SLS AMG to the B-Class) and other major trim pieces feature an electroplated "silver chrome" finish that creates a "cool touch" effect, according to Mercedes. The two-tier dashboard has a simple, elegant design, while soft-touch materials are more prevalent than before.
The A-Class will offer comprehensive iPhone integration, with all of the smartphone's functions accessible through the COMAND interface with a new "Digital DriveStyle App" working in conjunction with a dash-mounted LCD screen. A center armrest-mounted Controller will give the driver full control of the iPhone, but the system also allows for the use of voice commands via the iPhone's Siri technology.
Engineered by AMG
Mercedes says that AMG was involved in the development of the A-Class from a very early stage, and as a result the hatchback will be offered from launch with a new "Engineered by AMG" model boasting a number of performance and appearance upgrades. A specially tuned suspension is part of the package, as are red brake calipers that sit behind 5-spoke light-alloy AMG wheels. Thin red accent strips on the lower front and rear fascias signal the car's sporting intentions, while the interior gets a special red and black color scheme.
Those seeking an A-Class with a bit more scoot should know that a true AMG model with all-wheel-drive and more than 300 horsepower is also rumored to be in development.
When the new A-Class makes its way to European showrooms in September, it will face a number of significantly revised competitors including the recently-revealed Volvo V40 and Audi A3 hatchbacks as well as the new BMW 1-Series.
