Mercedes-Benz unveils efficient BlueZero trio in Detroit

01/11/2009, 2:41 PM

By Drew Johnson

Mercedes-Benz introduced three versions of its BlueZero concept, including a full battery-electric model, a fuel cell model and an extended-range electric that also features a power generator combustion engine. The models also preview the next-generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class models, on which the concepts are based.

The E-Cell concept features a 200 km range using just electric drive. Its lithium-ion battery has a charging capacity of 15 kW.

The F-Cell concept features a fuel cell setup that gives it zero emissions with a 400 km range.

The E-Cell plus features the E-Cell’s electric motor and lithium-ion battery, as well as the 1.0-liter, turbocharged three-cylinder that powers the Smart ForTwo.

Whew, things aren’t looking up, design-wise at the Detriot show so far. Other than the Dodge EV and Ford Taurus anyway. MPG / range-wise it’s GREAT, but man, these guys / gals are making big money “designing” these things, how can they be so far off.

its just a concept for petes sake… didnt you guys notice that production cars NEVER look like their concept couterparts? this is the fact for both great-looking concepts (the makers have to tune them down for whatever reason) as well as weird looking ones (the makers see the need to NOT make people throw up in their showrooms…).
expect the production version of this one to look much like a face-lifted B-Class today… not a beauty, but rather an econobox like any other…
