Illustrated: 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible

10/20/2008, 1:58 PM

By Nick Aziz

Last week, we brought you rumors about coupe and convertible versions of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class purportedly under development by the German automaker. Not to be confused with the CLK-Class — soon to be renamed E-Class Coupe and Convertible — the C-Class models will be priced against the BMW 3-Series and Audi A5/S5 lineups. So what might the new ‘Benz look like? Our artist has created one possible answer to that question.

It’s easy to imagine a two-door coupe or convertible version of the C-Class Sedan, but it’s safe to expect there will be a few surprises. After all, the 2010 CLK (E-Class Coupe) has a slightly different face than the E-Class Sedan, and the CL-Class (S-Class Coupe) is styled differently than the S-Class sedan.

Our artist gave the two-door C-Class a slightly different headlight design and a large-emblem grille typical of Mercedes coupes and convertibles.

So when will these models arrive? We already know the new E-Class range (sedan and coupe) will arrive next year, and the CL-Class will probably be renamed to S-Class as part of a mid-cyle facelift in early. As for the C-Class models, we suspect they’re at least two years away.

I think the CLK is going to be CLE according to many articles (bigger/more expensive) to compete with AUDIO S5/A5. The true 3 series fighter C-coupe/convertable make sense. Price it similar to the 335 but make sure that its got similar HP count. As of now, the C350 is still short of 300HP. Considering G37 / IS350 / 335 all have retractable hard tops ~ it will be hard for the C not to have them (Considering that Mercedes is the first to make them popular with their SL/SLK started in the 80s.)

Audifan; Even though the CLK class is a more comparible vehicle to the less expensive BMW and Audi, doesn’t mean that Merc didn’t INTEND for it to be competitive at a much higher segement… ;)

audifan: The CLK is much more expensive than a 3-series or a5. People have always been confused over its positioning due to its name and use of the c-class platform, but it has always been in the e-class price range. Since BMW never made a 5-series coupe (the 6-series is far more expensive and uses some 7er parts), it’s hard to find a good comparison. Audi doesn’t have an A6 coupe or convertible either, so the CLK kind of stands on its own.

That is obviously a photoshopped Saab 9-3 with Audi A4 headights and a generic Mercedes grille. Looks great though!
