2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible (CLK replacement) [Spied again]

With its recent Fascination concept car, Mercedes-Benz previewed its CLK-Class replacement. But while the Fascination showcased the new face of the next CLK (or rather the E-Class Convertible), it failed to address a crucial question about the next-generation car: Will the convertible version feature a soft or retractable hard top? We’ve got the answer.

Thanks to our crack spy photographers, we can confirm the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible will indeed feature a retractable hard top.

Clearly visible is the joint between the windshield frame and the front edge of the roof. The wider disguise of the C-post and the longer boot lid are other details that give away the secret of this prototype. Bigger and a bit more elegant than the outgoing model, the new E-CLass Convertible twins will be based on the E-Class sedan. It goes without saying, however, that refinement will be done to the chassis to meet expectations of the somewhat more ambitious coupe- and cabrio-drivers.

Engines will come from the E-Class line-up and will include a V8 for the top level car. We expect the coupe to arrive at the dealers in summer 2009 with the convertible following just a few months later.

ugh retractable hardtops are hideous, imagine if Aston Martin put one on the DB9 drop top instead of the soft top. Maybe they have a little more practicality but people buying these cars want looks first, smarts second. Stay soft top.

That image does project hardtop convertible with those thick C-pillars, but it does not look bad either.

I don’t get it. Why does every folding hardtop have hideously large rear ends?

I dunno, tyler, have you ever tried stuffing an 8-foot-long roof into a 2-foot-long opening? I’m guessing that’s why they need to stretch the boot a bit.. you can only fold the roof so many times before it becomes too tall to fit.

Something is telling me Mercedes is going wrong-way.
