Mercedes-Benz more or less occupied the midsize coupe bracket alone until Audi's A5 and S5 hit the market for the 2008 model year. Priced above BMW's 3-Series coupes and available with a V8 engine (CLK550), these cars were more or less without competition since they were released for the 2003 model year. Fortunately, Mercedes was wise enough to keep the CLK fresh as it enters its fifth model year.
The CLK350 features a 3.5-liter, 268-horsepower V6 engine and the CLK550 upgrades that same basic package with a 382-horsepower V8 and a couple of additional standard features. A 7-speed automatic transmission is standard on both.
The entry-level CLK350 includes 17' wheels, leather upholstery, and Mercedes' Tele-Aid system as standard. The CLK550 adds automatic dimming driver's-side and rearview mirrors, as well as a small rear spoiler. Options for both models include ventilated seats, a harman/kardon audio system, and a Sport Appearance Package with upgraded brakes suspension and wheels.
Priced competitively for a premium midsize coupe, the CLK should remain a formidable competitor despite the newer, more sporting Audis.
