Swoopy where its E-Class platform-mate is upright, the CLS550 is the E550's sexy alter ego. Though mechanically identical to the E550, the CLS550 adds a significant dose of style to the more plebian, conventional E550, both inside and out.

Powered by the same 382-horsepower, 391 lb.-ft. 5.5-liter V8 as the E550, the CLS550 is a smooth, torquey machine. A 7-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode provides fast, responsive shifts. The CLS550 received its current engine in 2007 when it replaced the less powerful CLS500.

Changes to the 2009 model are subtle, with redesigned front and rear fascias on the outside along with a new instrument cluster on the inside. The grille now has two fins instead of four, the side mirrors grew by a third and feature a new arrow-shaped built-in turn signal and the CLS rides on a new range of wheels. Rear lights have fast-acting LEDs built into them.

Inside, the trim has been updated, a new multimedia interface system was installed and a restyled 3-spoke steering wheel sits in place of the old one. Mercedes' Linguatronic voice control system for the car's functions is also a new addition for 2009.

Also, a new base model, the CLS 280, joins the line-up in markets other than North America. It is powered by a 231 horsepower V6 displacing 3.0 liters. Europe gets an updated diesel version of the CLS as well.

A broad, curvy dashboard with large expanses of wood trim gives the interior a tailor-made feel that's missing in more common luxury sedans like the E-Class and BMW 5-Series. Though visibility and rear-seat ingress/egress are limited compared to the larger greenhouse of the E-Class, the CLS provides a coupe-like feel from the driver's seat.

The rear seat is designed for just two thanks to a full-length center console that extends all the way through it. Combined with a smaller trunk than the standard sedan, the CLS forfeits some practicality.

Major options include a navigation system, heated/cooled front seats and an AMG Sport Package. That package includes shift buttons mounted on the steering wheel, unique bodyside cladding and 18' AMG-designed wheels, but no suspension changes.

Unique trims, like Sunset Red leather upholstery, give Mercedes-Benz an Audi-like dose of style.
