Mercedes-Benz launches CLS Grand Edition

01/02/2009, 4:23 PM

By Drew Johnson

Mercedes-Benz’s CLS started the whole four-door coupe revolution, but the current iteration of the car is getting a little long in the tooth. A CLS-replacement is still a few years away, so Mercedes decided to spruce up the lineup with a limited edition CLS Grand Edition.

The special edition CLS went on sale in the European market today and adds a unique package to a unique car. While most Mercedes roll off the assembly line floor with a shiny and illustrious paint job, the CLS Grand Edition can be had with platinum matte paint finish. Mercedes claims the matte finish is scratch and dirt resistant, but buyers that prefer to see themselves in their car’s reflection can still order the package in obsidian black, iridium silver, carneol red or flint grey metallic paint colors.

Other exterior features that set the Grand Edition apart from lesser CLS models are Bi-xenon headlamps with dark headlight castings, active headlights, a headlamp cleaning system, unique 18-inch AMG wheels and Grand Edition badging.

Inside, the CLS Grand Edition offers an Alcantara headliner, aluminum sports pedals, wood trim and ‘Grand Edition’ floor mats.

The CLS Grand Edition retails from 67,294.50 euros, with deliveries slated for March 2009.

If it don’t have a Twin Turbo V-12, with a true 6 speed stick shift with 8 piston caliper & 15″ disc Brimbos….

don’t care…

and “aluminum sports pedals”

Wow – it doesn’t come standard with those things? A VW GTI has those features at no cost, but a 80k+ Mercedes it’s a freakin’ option.

I’m still on the fence on the matte finish paints. They look interesting and maybe it grows on you, but touching up on it maybe hard to do. If you get in a wreck – how does the paint job match up then? And who will even fix it? How easy is it to wash- more water spots from it having a less slick surface? Can you wax it? I still see this as being the next fad in cars in the very near future – especially on luxury cars and Jeep Wranglers.

That is one seriously overpriced vehicle. The very cheapist regular CLS starts at $70,700 and if you’ve ever built any car on mbusa.com, you already know that evvvvrything is a la carte…and the options are wayyyy overpriced. Mercedes-Benz is out of line, and a foolish purchase.

Oh and Zcarsales is right…sort of. If you wanted this category of car, The Volkswagen CC is at the very least, a much smarter purchase.

yea, I LOVE the CC. And not just because I be biased :) . I think for the money it is nicer then the TL, although i would give the TL a slight edge in handling (AWD Vs 4Motion), but for the money, 27k starting price, you can’t go wrong with the CC imbo!

actually jakeK, the VW GTI doesnt have the headlight cleaning system anymore. It was only for the 2006 model year, then they started cutting corners to save on cost.

more automakers need to bring out matte paint jobs too, i think they look stellar, id certainly consider something in matte as long as it wasnt a $2500 option.
