2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet [Live image update]

01/11/2010, 2:15 PM

By Drew Johnson

A svelte drop-top companion to the E-Class range of sedans, coupes and wagons, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet unveiled today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit will initially be offered with two engine configurations.

Bigger and more elegantly styled than the outgoing CLK convertible, the E-Class Cabriolet features a traditional cloth softop rather than the folding metal roof that is en vogue on many of its rivals. The roof is thickly insulated, according to Mercedes-Benz, to allow for Bluetooth phone conversations at high speeds with the roof up, and it retracts or raises in less than 20 seconds at speeds up to 25 mph.

The E-Class Cabriolet will be offered in both V6 E350 and V8-powered E550 variants when it goes on sale in May of 2010.

Both engines will be mated to seven-speed automatic transmissions. The E350 gets a 268 horsepower, 258 lb-ft. of torque 3.5-liter V6, while the E550 receives Mercedes’ 382-horsepower, 391 lb-ft. of torque 5.5-liter V8.

With a coefficient of drag of just 0.25, the E-Class Cabriolet is the most aerodynamic offering in its class. The body is clearly derivative of the E-Class Coupe, but some changes were made to the rear to accommodate the unique trunk panel.

Inside, the E-Class Cabriolet is again almost identical to its coupe brother. The AIRCAP automatic draft stop system, which debuts in the E-Class Cabriolet, uses a wind deflector and a draft-stop mounted behind the rear seats to dramatically decrease windflow in the cabin when the windows are up to ensure an undisturbed driving experience. Mercedes’ heated AIRSCARF neck-level heating system also makes an appearance in the E-Class Cabriolet.

this thread was necromanced from 2 months ago, and i don’t really feel much different…

i like hardtop convertibles for one major reason, security…it takes a lot more force to push a screwdriver through a hardtop than it does a fabric top! ;) for crime-ridden areas where car theft and break-ins are commonplace, that’s actually a meaningful concern…

I’d rather have this softtop over the hardtop 3 series cab. Softops are just more attractive to me as it allows the rear to be smaller and when up, it’s not hiding it’s a convertible like the cheaper hard tops versions.

The Z4, Mazda Miata and Ferrari California all are the exception as they look better/the same either way – as the California and Z4 were designed only as Hardtops, so they look more together than the G37 and 3 Series hardtops.

Lftwing – that’s why you have comprehensive car insurance – but you still have to pay for the deductable and good luck evr catching the guys (or in Tiger Woods case – gals) who did it!

Nice car. I’m sure it will sell as well as the coupe and will be cheaper than the CLK was, as well.

i think that the A5 or S5 cabs are much nicer and their Quattro also. And they’re soft tops with folding rear seats, you can fit golf bags with the top down. can’t say that about a hard top convertible

LWA.. if you have to be concerned about parking in crime-ridden areas, you probably wouldn’t be driving a Mercedes-Benz. :)

boring, pointless and will continue the mercedes trend of being way over priced. Mercedes has gone down hill way to much. I don’t know if you guys remember about 2 years ago where Mercedes gained over 1 point some billion dollars just be making their products cheaper. (Not in price, cheaper in material.) Mercedes doesn’t have the classy luxury edge that it did back in the day. And the engineering has gone down hill as well, the company just seems so apathetic.

I kinda anticipated this. bye bye CLK. Not that it really matters being a name is a name if you’re replacing one model with a version of another.

So what’s with those rear haunches? Are they supposed to be a distinctive styling element or remind owners of their looming hip replacement surgery?

you say that, zoomzoomer, but you’d be surprised how much **** can happen to your car while you’re out to dinner or over at a friends house…no joke, in st. louis your car can get ****ed up fast…a buddy of mine had his car stolen while we were all at dinner in what seemed like a reasonable part of town…and we are talking mercedes here, not maybachs and gulfstreams jets ;)

Nice Sebring.

In that color, it looks too similar to the ultimate crappy convertible.

The safest city in the USA is Irvine, California.

I’ve had my car broken into there twice in the past two years.

Property crime isn’t counted in safety statistics, and the smart theives know their time is better spent in nicer areas than ghetto ‘hoods.

@ BuyUSA- F@#$ that. Chrysler screwed themselves. They can’t do anything right without needing their hand held by someone else. I feel no pity for Chrysler. FIAT should phase out their name.

to me, mercedes lost their cool a long time ago! There really isn’t anything special with this that makes you say, “Hey look, that’s a mercedes!”

The CLK cabrio was my favorite Mercedes. I see it as an SL-Class with more seats and a lower price. And now the E cabrio is my favorite. & (@ Reedfast) Tail lights are not great, but that’s how you know it’s a Mercedes-Benz: bad tail lights.

Naturally. I was waiting for a CLK replacement/convertible version for E-Class coupe.

It’s like a rule of thumb. A luxury coupe comes out, you automatically know a convertible follows close behind.

Nice looking. Cheap-looking dashboard. Just like the CLK, this is totally a ‘chick car’.
