Shown as a thinly-disguised concept car earlier today at the New York International Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz E250 Bluetec previews an ultra-efficient four-cylinder diesel E-Class aimed at the North American market.

Under the E250′s hood is a four-cylinder Bluetec diesel powertrain that, in conjunction with a seven-speed automatic transmission, achieves 28 mpg around town and 39 mpg on the highway and meets the proposed EU6 emissions standards.

The E250′s 2.2-liter CDI-based engine receives the Bluetec treatment – a pair of Selective Catalytic Reduction catalytic converters with an AdBlue injector positioned upstream. The AdBlue aqueous urea solution enables nitrogen oxide to be converted to harmless nitrogen gas in the converters.

The motor puts out 204 horsepower and 369 lb-ft. of torque available from just 1,600 rpm.

Mercedes calls it a concept, but we’d expect it to arrive more or less unchanged as a 2011 model.
