Just got one in my garage due to some ****head client who cancelled on the last minute. It didn’t get out for about a month since nobody wants to use it. The brakes sucked compared to other germans, the interior is outdated, driver seats are highly uncomfortable, and true to MB’s tradition is sucks gas like there’s no tomorrow. At least the backseat is more comfortable than the 5 series and A6.

Johnny, that kind of ego does not apply to Benz clientèle. I havent’ seen grander assholes, especially my brother in law. You are describing Camry/Accord/Civic/Corolla audience. But those cars usually trouble free from the beginning. Wishes circle.

There’s a lot to be said about a model at the end of it’s production cycle. At the very least all the bugs have been worked out and in most cases what used to be options early in the run are now standard equipment. If your ego can tolerate not having the latest and greatest, you’re probably going to end up with a reliable and well equipped piece.

Back in 2002 I thought this a very tasteful, classic design. And it still is. But compared to the current C-Class, it’s clearly too round and too bland. The smaller, less expensive sedan has far more presence, and is more distinctive.

I suspect that the start/stop button is on the shifter–it’s also there in the SL–to give the car a touch of fighter jet character. Just instead of firing missles, you’re firing up the engine.

That said, a “sport mode” button would be better there.

You can actually get Bluetooth in the E-Class all the way back to the 2001 model if you have the phone kit and a bluetooth module from MB. http://www.wireless4mb.com

If you don’t already have the phone kit option, then it’s a very costly retrofit.

The shift knob-mounted starter button was a concern to me as well, especially when shifting to reverse from park. Other cars I have tested required pushing a button so naturally, I did it here as well. The engine shut off, and then you have to repeat the process (place in park, foot on brake, push button).

A small annoyance but eventually you remember to keep your thumb off the button!

Maybe it has a lockout on it, like a reverse lockout or a neutral safety switch.

I just noticed the Engine Start/Stop button on the gear shifter. Now THAT seems like a very bad idea. I could definitely see myself bumping it with my knuckles and shutting the engine off by accident. What the hell is the point of putting it on the gear selector? There’s nothing wrong with having the button on the dash or center console. Anywhere but there.

I was thinking it is one of the nicer Mercedes interiors. Not as stylish as the CTS interior, but nice.

That’s still a pretty sweet car. The interior is starting to look kinda old though. I do like how they break up color with the seats from the carpet and door panels, it reminds me of my Road Runner.
