2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG [Live Image Update]

04/08/2009, 5:20 PM

By Nick Aziz

Mercedes-Benz used its press conference at the New York Auto Show today to reveal a number of new vehicles, including the 2010 E63 AMG Sedan. The German hotrod is powered by Mercedes’ familiar 6.2L V8, generating 518 horsepower – a gain of 9 horsepower over the previous car — and 485 pound-feet of torque. That should be enough to get the E63 AMG from zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds, on its way to an electronically limited 155 mph.

Although the 2010 E63 AMG model sees a modest bump in power compared to the outgoing car, it is said improve fuel economy by about 12 percent. Most of that gain can be attributed to the car’s new seven-speed gearbox. The new transmission also features four driving modes: Controlled Efficiency, Sport, Sport Plus and Manual.

To distinguish the AMG model from lesser E-Class sedans, the E63 will sport AMG-specific 18-inch wheels (19s are optional) as well as unique front and rear fascia and AMG’s signature quad-exhaust treatment.

The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG will likely bow at the 2009 New York Auto Show, with UK sales sets to kick off in September.

That’s a gorgeous monster. I’m still not a fan of the rear lights but I guess I’ll have to rough ‘em up.

the rear has a touch of hyundai

The front looks good but the rear is a pathetic Japanese mess. And I miss the torque-loaded 5.5l supercharged E55. I’d buy a used one of those before a new one of these.

looks junky.
the execution looks fussy, probably looked better on paper perhaps.
looks like it was designed by a huge committee. 10 design cues into one.
MB created a dated new look

You know, we’ve all seen the trapezoidal quad front headlights coming for a long time now, but I have to be honest, it’s still taking me a long time to get used to them.

Time will tell, but I don’t think I’m going to be a fan of this design iteration. On this one, I agree with ‘A4′: give me a used E55; I think it has a more elegant demeanor and an engine that’s arguably more fun.

i will also take a used e55, or the previous e63 or even e550. i think those all look better than this!

The taillights from a new mitsubishi galant/hyundai?? Nice job on the engine but taking one over the e55?? I don’t think so….

With the price tag that the new E63 might end up having, the CTS-V doesn’t seem like a bad idea right now.

AJ, for the price your getting an AMG Benze, with Cadillac, well, its just a Cadillac, not exactly a brand that commands respect. The Caddy may be very close in performance with this Benze, but the quality difference is huge, and suddenly the Caddy seems overpriced when you look at how cheaply built those things are.

Before spending your money on an old E55 it has the worse chassis of all the supercharged 5.5 in the line up like the SL and S-class, it has terrible numb steering, prone to understeer, stupid seats, permanent ESP and the list goes on they are only fun in the straights not to mention the choppy ride.

If you enjoy the engine, get an S-class or SL version, i haven’t driven a CLS 55

this one will kick ass. not as much as the upcoming M5 maybe, but heck, who cares if you can do 0-60 in 4.5 or 4.6 (bo this are not actual numbers, but i figure they wont be TOO far away from them)

Looks ok, but really nothing to write home about…

@planet_drive:
I’m not one to normally defend American cars, but the CTS-V is a really great car, and your complaint about quality is unfair, Cadillac has made huge strides in quality, to the point that they now top the JD Powers quality ratings in many categories. The inside might look a LITTLE less rich and nice in the CTS, but remember you can most likely buy 2 CTS-Vs for the price of this thing…

I saw the test mule about 2 months ago in a parking structure (Long Beach, CA) with factory plate on it. It looks great in person with dramatic bumper and subtle design update form the standard E. Price is all relative I guess. There are always people want to pay premium to get that extra refinement in the car. But I do agree with some of the feedback that if I am paying almost double compare to the standard E, I would like people to know!!

Looks good on paper; we shall see how it runs.

This, the XFR, and CTS-V would all be at the top of the list for me. Decisions decisions …….
