Our spy photographers have just sent us the first images of Mercedes-Benz ’ all-new GL-Class SUV. Tied closely to Mercedes’ ML-Class SUV, the revised GL should hit the market in 2012.

Not much is known about the next-generation GL – codenamed X166 – at this time, but the ML’s bigger brother is expected to launch sometime in 2012 as a 2013 model. The GL will borrow the ML’s platform, albeit in long-wheelbase form.

Powertrains for the new ute remain a mystery, but the entire engine range is expected to be more fuel efficient than today’s offerings. It’s possible a V6 could join the range, although a V8 will undoubtedly be part of the lineup. We’ve also heard rumors that Mercedes could be planning a hybrid variant of the GL.

Look for the next GL to debut sometime in 2012 as a 2013 model.
