2010 Mercedes-Benz GL to bow at New York show

04/03/2009, 12:03 PM

By Drew Johnson

It’s been a while since our spied have spotted the updated Mercedes-Benz GL testing in the wild, but the big SUV will soon surface again at the 2009 New York Auto Show. The 2010 refresh will be the GL’s first since it hit the market in 2006.

Our previous spy shots have revealed a nearly undisguised version of the 2010 GL. Looking at the front end of this prototype we can see much of it will stay unchanged, apart from the area within the fender flare which appears to have redesigned fog lights and outer air intakes hiding beneath that camouflage. Expect to see a new bumper, grille and headlights.

The rear takes a similar theme with the black clad camouflage hiding the rear fog lights area. We can also see modifications will be made to the rear bumper and taillights as well.

Engines are expected to stay largely unchanged, however due to the minor changes already mentioned, Mercedes will have to make some interior and equipment modifications to really pass this off as a facelift.

Does anyone care about big SUVs anymore?

I can’t believe that the Luxo brands are still churning these things out when the market has obviously turned against them.

Well, if you have a family yes, a large SUV is a good thing.

But I am really aware of fuel consumption. I love this car, but I would only consider it as diesel engine. So it has a better mileage.

Need more oil for GM

It should be showing up to the show the same way they get home after some buffoon buys one.

On the back of a flatbed or Tow truck.

The King of SUV’s is the Escalade and this POS isn;t even close to the quality and reliability of a world reknown GM product. Fail.

Buy American. Buy GM. It is your patriotic duty

Borat, they’re the same thing. In either case once you get in you don’t want to get out and whether it be money or nature’s swim team you usually end up blowing your load.

Johnny, that reminds me of a scholarly argument Rabbi had with Catholic priest

Padre: So Rabbi between us theologists have you ever tried pork?
Rabbi: You know Padre when I was young and got drunk I had some.
Padre: Was it good. eh?
Rabbi: Padre, please be honest, have you ever been with woman?
Padre: You know Rabbi, I was young and drunk and before I took an oath…
Rabbi: Can you compare it with piece of greasy meat?

Need more oil, how many more days left till GM declares bankruptcy?

Being ignorant is what got the big three into trouble, you don’t need to continue that trend for them.

One thing to keep in mind, as gugy said, is that as long as there are families (I myself in a family of seven), and rich people (as idrinorbarsaku said), full size luxury SUV’s will always be strong sellers in the market, even one as bad as this one currently. By the way, I like the GL.

Funny… there were famalies back in the 70’s and 80’s when SUVs didn’t exist. What did they drive? Vans and wagons… the more sensible alternative to a behemoth gas guzzler with off-road capability that is never used. Wagons can haul just as much as a SUV in terms of people and their stuff… plus they get better mileage, handle better on the road, and can actually manouver in close parking lots. 90% of SUV drivers will never need the offroad capability, so why bother with it and all the associated handling penalites at all?

@ RaineMan , i guess people want more safety for their families.

She’s married, Borat. I wouldn’t want to intrude on their marriage, now would I? ;)

And that reminds me of a convo Peter Griffin had with a Rabbi:

Peter: So Rabbi, do you get paid for circumcisions?
Rabbi: No, but I keep the tips.

Ok, that’s irrelevant…but the G-Wagen is cool. Go offroading all day, come back home, wash it, and you have a car you can take out for a night on the town (same applies for the Lexus LX570 and Toyo Landcruiser).

Safety? Since when are SUVs safer than cars? I see SUVs involved in rollover accidents all the time… my cousin was killed when she ran her Navigator off the road and flipped it. If she had been driving a car odds are that wouldn’t have happened. My neighbor fell asleep behind the wheel of her 2007 Pathfinder, crossed the center line, and took out 3 cars in the opposing lane before she came to a stop. If she had been in a car she would have stopped after the first hit. So… tell me, how are SUVs safer?

there is no excuse for bad driving. but if a car hits me , i would rather be in a GL than a Fiesta.

Odds are if you were in the fiesta you would have been able to either stop short or swerve out of the way. Small vehicles have manouverability on their side. Actually being in a larger vehicle when involved in a crash is worse than being in a small one… there’s a thing called momentum and the conservation of energy. A two-ton SUV travelling at 55MPH carries far more momentum than a one-ton car. Plus with the recent advances in multi-stage airbags, crumple zones, and what have you most cars are just as safe as their larger brethren. SUVs being safer than any car is just a myth.

@ RaineMan , whatever , keep telling yourself that. I’ve seen SUVs go through normal cars like a hot knife through butter , all passengers in the cars dead or seriously wounded and the SUV passengers walked away without even a bruise.
