Mercedes-Benz launches AMG Sport package for S and CL-Class

04/15/2009, 9:49 AM

By Andrew Ganz

After quietly introducing the 2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class last week – away from the New York International Auto Show – the German automaker has taken the wraps off of its optional AMG-designed Sport package for the European variants of the new S-Class and CL-Class.

Though not offering quite the level of substance buyers will find in the S63 AMG and S65 AMG – both of which were leaked earlier this week - the Sport package does capture some of the high-performance sedans’ style with a special body kit and unique 19-inch alloy wheels. For those desiring even more road presence, the automaker will offer a 20-inch wheel option.

The styling changes include a revised front apron with larger air intakes, a rear apron with faux diffuser and rectangular exhaust pipe trim.

Ventilated disc brakes with silver-painted calipers also make an appearance, rounding out the non-cosmetic changes.

Inside, the package includes black ash wood trim, special floor mats and AMG badging throughout.

It’s unclear exactly what level of content will be offered on North American-specification 2010 S-Class and CL-Class cars with the Sport package given the press photos and information are relevant only to European-spec cars, but we’d expect those that cross the Atlantic will more-or-less mirror their home market equivalents.

Also does anyone care? I mean you can almost expect there to be an AMG model for just about every Merc available it has been that way for days.

I don’t think this is worthy of a story. It’s nice, but those who care will go to a dealership and find out more.
