Mercedes-Benz is preparing to begin production of the second-generation CLS – the car that is attributed for starting the ever-growing trend of automakers producing four-door saloons with swooping rear lines more commonly found on two-door coupes.
When Mercedes-Benz essentially created the four-door coupe segment in 2005 it did so by utilizing the now previous generation E-Class platform. Now, Mercedes-Benz is ready to move onto the second generation, superseding the old E-Class platform, or W211, with a new platform known as the W212.
But before this new model can go into production, Mercedes-Benz had to produce one final version of the first-gen car, black in color, complete with upgraded Xenon headlamps, the AMG performance body kit – and of course a myriad of high-tech interior options to go with the premium leather seating.
Mercedes-Benz says in total it produced 170,000 CLS models since its introduction in 2005, with the final car heading to the U.S.
