Mercedes-Benz has announced the recall 102,954 SUVs due to a defect that could cause the loss of power steering. The recall – which is set to begin in October — includes M-Class SUVs built between 1998 and 2003.
According to Automotive News, a defective cooling hose clamp is the reason for the recall. The cooling hose – which cools the power steering system – may not hold with enough force, causing a reduction in the amount of boost on tap. The defect could also damage the vehicle’s power steering pump.
“This could result in a loss of control and a crash without warning,” NHTSA said. Despite the severity of the recall, it doesn’t appear as though any accidents or injuries have been linked to the defect.
Mercedes’ M-Class SUVs were recalled for a similar problem in 2003, but the problem was not properly fixed. Therefore even M-Class vehicles that went in for a fix earlier this decade are still included in the latest recall.
