2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe (CL replacement) [Spied again]

06/23/2009, 3:51 PM

By Drew Johnson

Mercedes-Benz is working on a new CL, which will be more appropriately named the S-Class Coupe at its debut, and we have a great look at a prototype roaming around the Nurburgring! The CL’s name change falls in line with Mercedes’ new naming scheme, which also included the E-Class Coupe.

Mercedes is working on a CL update, which, according to our sources, will be renamed the S-Class Coupe. New features will include LED daytime headlights and, possibly, LED taillamps as well. A newly designed front bumper is also hinted in these photos, and the AMG versions will sport a more aggressive look.

Upfront, the updated grille doesn’t look as quite slanted as the current CL grille, and will now will have fewer chrome bars across it, giving more prominence to the Mercedes badge sitting in the middle.

Underhood, we expect the CL’s engine offerings to largely remain unchanged.

We’re anticipating a Frankfurt Motor Show introduction for the “new” S-Class Coupe.

This is good because the only thing keeping me from a Mercedes dealership was that I was too stupid to know that a CLK was positioned as a mid-range coupe and that the CL was the big coupe. Thanks Mercedes!!!

Shows you how far Opel has come amongst the German manufacturers. The front appears to be a knock-off of the hot new Insignia

I may be wrong, but the front headlights get a shape that even more resembles the Acura CL. Well, I guess even art has its limits… then follows overachieving.

Oh come on! Stop saying it looks like some others because this isn’t even the first CL, S-Class C whatever… I mean, comparing to an Opel front when this front has a while in MB design? Please.

The CL is everyone’s favorite MB so don’t mess it for us!

The rear end is unappealing. It makes me wonder how did Mercedes’ design change so drastically? Did they hire a new team of designers?

Is this the same as the CL-Class? Because it looks so much like it. There are nothing new here.

Why they wanna erase the CL-class ??? and replace it wit this ? and the same story as the CLK they gonna replace it with the E-class Coupe. its just wrong and not very clever movement from Merc.

LLN is saying it’s a new naming scheme, it isn’t. Prior to 1997, you had the S-Class Sedan and S-Class Coupes. In 1997, the renamed the S-Class coupes as the CL for the 1998 model year. They’re going going back to the S-Class Coupe, because of the CLK being replaced by the E-Class Coupe
