It may be some time before Mercedes-Benz officially introduces the SLS AMG Black Series, but our illustrator has used information gleaned from spy pics and insider reports to put together an accurate rendering of what to expect when the upgraded version of Mercedes’ already potent supercar hits the streets.
The car will stay true to the successful Black Series formula of removing weight while adding power, but in this case the modifications should be enough to allow it to take on cars like the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo and Audi R8 GT.
The SLS AMG Black Series will represent the final and greatest chapter for AMG’s magnificent 6.2-liter V8, which is currently being phased out in favor of a more fuel-efficient twin-turbo 5.5-liter mill. As such, expect power in the neighborhood of 650 ponies and a drool-worthy exhaust note. Coupled to a fortified version of the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission from the “standard” SLS, the car should hit 60 mph from a standstill in just above three seconds, while the suspension will also see a host of performance-improving tweaks.
As illustrated above (a normal SLS is pictured to the right for purposes of comparison), the car will get a more aggressive exterior with gaping air intakes in the front fascia, a louvered hood for improved engine cooling and bulging fenders that house seriously wide rubber. Other Black Series-specific touches will include a new front lip design with increased downforce and a single blade duct opening in the fender behind the front wheels.
It’s unclear just when the SLS AMG Black Series will make it into production, but when it does it won’t be cheap: seeing as the SL65 AMG Black Series commanded in excess of $300,000, expect the uber-SLS to go for at least $400,000.
