Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz brand will build a new production facility in either the United States or Mexico as a part of its plan to sell 2.7 million vehicles by 2020, the company’s chief executive has disclosed.
Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche revealed in a recent interview with Manager Magazin that the company will build a new production plant in North America. Mercedes currently operates one North American plant located in Vance, Alabama.
No specific locations were mentioned, but Zetsche said the plant will be built in either the U.S. or Mexico.
Mercedes-Benz is nipping at the heals of BMW for the title or world’s largest premium car brand, with the new plant expected to boost the company past its cross-country rival. Mercedes-Benz sold 1.26 million vehicles worldwide last year, falling 120,000 units short of BMW’s final count.
Mercedes hopes to grow its global sales to 1.6 million by 2015, with that figure growing to 2.7 million by 2020.
