Now you can buy the first Mercedes-Benz model

A replica of the 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen is for sale.

Mercedes-Benz is once again selling the first car it ever made. The 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen is now something you can actually buy via the company's classic car service.

The Benz Patent Motorwagen is widely considered to be one of the earliest cars ever built. Back on January 29, 1886, it became the first vehicle with an internal combustion engine to receive a patent. That engine has only one cylinder making 2/3 horsepower at 250 rpm and the car has only three wheels, with a top speed of 10 mph. It's more of a horseless carriage than a car.

Of course, the car offered for sale is a replica. A small run was built in 2001-02 for museum and exhibition purposes. The particular example offered for sale was built in 2002 and recently re-acquired by All Time Stars, Mercedes-Benz's classic restoration arm.

There is little information offered otherwise, and if you are interested you'll have to contact All Time Stars for a price. It probably won't be a bit more than the $150 it cost when new, or even the $4,086 that amount would be equivalent to today, but it'll likely be your only chance to buy the first Benz model from the company itself.
