Mercedes, BMW to collaborate on next A-Class?

07/06/2007, 3:41 PM

By Andrew Ganz

BMW and Mercedes-Benz, longtime cross-country rivals, are rumored to be working together on the Mercedes A-Class replacement. It has been reported that Mercedes won’t replace the A-Class, its smallest car, but these new rumors suggest that Mercedes could collaborate with BMW by using the Mini platform.

Mercedes had been planning to collaborate with Chrysler on the project, but given the soon-to-be-nonexistence of DaimlerChrysler, such a partnership is highly unlikely, reports Auto Bild.

Mercedes and BMW work together to develop hybrid platforms, so it would be no surprise for the two German powerhouses to get together on another project.

I live in central London and have an A-class, it’s not a great car to drive but it wins on versatility thanks to the unique sandwich platform, no other car can match its interior space to overall length ratio. This is what made the original A-class truly innovative and attracted me to it. It can carry up to 5 people and fits into spaces other cars (a Golf for example) wouldn’t dare to try. Basing the next generation A-class on BMW’s mini platform would be a massive step backwards because it can’t possibly match the space efficiency the current configuration affords.

I highly doubt BMW will help Mercedes with competition…

Looks like Mercedes needs help from the more prestigous automaker :)

Those two are tough rivals. They both have good running names in the industry. But, I look over Mercedes, they have far way to go, since they made a lot these year, made so much impressive design and upgrades, even with the parts that they’ve been putting in the recent models, such as the Mercedes Benz Ignition Coil, made even superior, contributing to the overall rising of the performance of Mercedes vehicles. But, if there is really a collaboration effort between the two, it would be great; they’d surely make a powerful car for that.

BMWrulez – I think you need to get your fact right. Notice how two BMW execs have asked Mercedes (in public) to do part sharing with BMW but a Mercedes exec said NO WAY last week. Plus Mercedes is planning to kill the A-class (thankfully) so why even bother sharing?

I think if any car gets shared its more likely the next Smart Forfour.

Stuart, do you have an article i can see? I wasn’t aware BMW had publicly made an annoucement needing MB’s help…

That doesnt sound rational, especially for BMW, an independent company.

I don’t understand why two major car companies have to collaborate on a small car platform. They seem to do way more complicated things independently with striking results – why does this require a collaboration?

BMWrulz and Deanster – with small cars you make less profit s you would do with the traditional large BM/Merc cars. Meaning to maximize profit you have to share cost to keep cost low. Audi for example shares the A3 platform with the Golf, Seat and skoda. Plus if the Mini plant is not running at full capacity then they will again be losing money unlike before where the mini was so sucessful it didn’t really matter.

Personally I think they will probably share the B-class platform with the mini but I would rather see them kill the B-class and build a smart car from the mini platform (like a updated forfour).

They should really consider sharing a 3-series/ C-class platform as the cars are built to perform the same way, built in the same country, designed only a year apart, both are the same spec, both are the best selling cars in their brand and both need to cut cost to maximise their profits for their respective brands.

Could you just imagine the end result – C-class
looks + luxury and 3 series sports handling.
